Keva, 14-years-old, Math Level N, Reading Level I<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

From her extracurricular activities to volunteering, Keva has a passion for\npositively impacting other people\u2019s lives. The 14-year-old can be found helping\nthe youth in her community as an assistant at her local Kumon Center, assisting\nat a taekwondo studio 4-5 hours a week, and volunteering with an organization\nthat allows her to be a mentor to younger kids. Despite her busy schedule, Keva\ncontinues to seek more opportunities to learn, especially about medical\ntechnologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe most beneficial thing\nI\u2019ve learned throughout my Kumon journey is to follow through and keep learning\nabout things that I have a passion for. I have also taken this attitude\nelsewhere, as I have a strong passion for AI and genetic engineering. I aspire\nto use these technologies in the future to possibly improve our lives and help\nin finding a solution to today’s incurable diseases,\u201d said Keva. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keva looks for ways to\nexpand her knowledge and is constantly keeping up with recent breakthroughs in\nthese technologies. \u201cI am currently exploring polygenic scores and how it will\ntransform research regarding the causes\/consequences of intelligence. I am also\nworking on articles for using CRISPR 2.0 to cure GvHD from CAR T-Cell\ntransplants,\u201d said Keva.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to that, Keva is\nhelping with research being done at John Hopkins University<\/a> regarding the circuit\nmechanisms of anxiety. Using in vivo calcium imaging technologies in mice, the\nresearch aims to find the neural signatures underlying anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her determination to make an impact on others\u2019 lives can be seen\nin her drive to continuously deepen her knowledge for these technologies. She\nhas found that being self-disciplined allows her to motivate herself and stay\non track to accomplish goals she has set.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the summer, Keva founded the startup, Steerclear, which helps small businesses bring in more customers while simultaneously helping them make safer shopping decisions. It works as a platform and is a customer counter tool that communicates an establishment’s capacity while keeping a live count of the number of people within the location. This platform has been tested in her local Kumon Center and is beginning to be used by other businesses in the community. <\/p>\n\n\n

Keva\u2019s goals can also be seen in other areas of her life. She has taken\nit upon herself to continue learning various new languages. She can speak\nfluent French, Hindi and Mandarin, and is now learning Latin and Spanish. Keva\nalso has a love for the arts in which she plays the piano, violin and sings at various\nevents in and outside of school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhenever I find new\ninformation or material to be challenging, I am self-motivated to overcome the\ndifficulties I face. Ultimately, I now find it to be a greater satisfaction to\novercome barriers with a huge sense of accomplishment,\u201d says Keva. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How has Kumon helped\nyou outside of the classroom?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Kumon has allowed me to develop a mindset of figuring things out\nfor myself. This is where I\u2019ve learned to be persistent to accomplish the goals\nI have put in place. Because of Kumon, I have been able to apply this mindset\nelsewhere, including taekwondo which I have done since the age of 6, and I now\nhave received my blackbelt. I also finished grade 9 piano and am part of the\nsenior strings orchestra at my school for violin. In grade 7 and 8, I had the\nopportunity to compete in the Let\u2019s Talk Science competition\nin Toronto, where I placed third and first consecutively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your favorite book and why?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Since I was little, a book that I\u2019ve always loved is Winnie the\nPooh! As a kid, I didn\u2019t fully appreciate it, but I now realize many of the\nlife lessons. I still remember the very first story in which Pooh attempts to\nget honey from a honeycomb on the top of a tall tree. Bees get suspicious of\nhim and he comes up with the idea to fly up in a blue balloon to blend in with\nthe sky and roll in mud to disguise himself as a black cloud. Thus, the first\nlesson I learned is to always think creatively and outside the box. It has also\ntaught me empathy, thinking positively, being confident in who you are, and\nmost definitely, friendship. As Pooh says, \u201cA day without a friend is like a\npot without a single drop of honey left inside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who\nis your biggest inspiration and why?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

My biggest inspiration and best friend is my mom. My mom\u2019s the\ntype of person who will repeat a story that she finds funny about a billion\ntimes. I\u2019ll hear her story on the phone, in person, again with other people and\nit kind of drives me crazy. Recently, I found out that I\u2019ve also started\ntelling people things from the past that are embedded in their memories\nforever. That\u2019s when the “you’re going to be exactly like me” line\nreally hit. But honestly, as much as I wouldn\u2019t personally admit to her, my mom\nhas been the one to help shape my consciences, and I\u2019d love to be everything\nshe is today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice would you give to kids just starting\nKumon?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019d say to keep going with it and try and follow through on your\ngoals, even when it can sometimes get tough! Accomplishing the goals you set,\nwhich might possibly be completing the Kumon Program, can give you the\nconfidence to tackle so much more in or out of school. Kumon will show you that\nit’s possible to always learn more and improve compared to the day before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
