Each year on March 14th, or 3\/14, math lovers around the world celebrate Pi Day. Pi is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant\u2014the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter\u2014which is approximately 3.14159. While Pi has an infinite number of digits, the current record is 50 trillion digits beyond its decimal point. This was calculated by Timothy Mullican <\/a>in January of 2020. Keep in mind though that only a handful of the digits are needed for typical calculations, so you won\u2019t need to memorize all 50 trillion! Pi\u2019s infinite nature makes it one of the most popular mathematical concepts. Check out our infographic to learn more about what is Pi Day. <\/p>\n\n\n

Want to incorporate\nfun ways to celebrate today? Here are three Pi Day activities you can try with\nyour kids:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Make Pi Bracelets<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

One way to help your kids memorize pi digits is to make pi bracelets! This can be done by using different colored beads representing the different numbers in Pi. For example, you can see from the image (on the right) that 1= blue, 2= yellow, 3=green, and so on. Have your kids keep track of how many beads are used for the bracelet to fit on their wrist. This will determine how many digits of pi they used to create it to practice their math skills! If your child would like to continue improving their math skills, be sure to check out the Kumon Math Program<\/a>.

2. Play Pi Word Connect<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Pi Word Connect is a great opportunity to help your child practice their reading and writing skills. Pi Word Connect starts by using the last letter of a word to start a new one. For example, your child can begin the game by saying and writing \u201cpi.\u201d Then your child could continue with \u201cice,\u201d followed by \u201ceat\u201d and \u201ctrain.\u201d To help expand your child\u2019s vocabulary<\/a> and reading abilities beyond Pi Word Connect, check out the Kumon Reading Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider challenging older children to try combining this game with Word Pi. You can use the same method above, but this time the word must have the same number of letters that correspond with pi. For example, a sequence could be \u201cink,\u201d \u201ck,\u201d \u201ckind,\u201d \u201cd,\u201d \u201cdiary\u201d to correspond with pi\u2019s opening sequence of 3.1415. Not only will they be reading and writing these words but considering ones that follow along with the digits in pi.

3. Eat Pi Day Pie<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n

Whether you love pizza pie, apple pie, or any other flavor of pie, grab a slice as a fun way to celebrate Pi Day today. If you want to take it up a notch, search for a pie recipe to make together that the whole family will enjoy. Who knows, you might even wind up turning this activity into an annual Pi Day tradition! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
