At one point or another, almost every student gets frustrated with a complex math concept<\/a> and laments, \u201cWhen will I ever use this in real life?\u201d<\/p>\n

But in actuality, math is necessary and used in many aspects of \u201creal life.\u201d From academic pursuits to common careers to household budgeting, math is ingrained in almost every aspect of everyday life.<\/p>\n

Here are four reasons that kids need to master math:<\/p>\n

Math Lays the Foundation <\/strong><\/h4>\n

Basic arithmetic and math skills lay the foundation for any upper-level math course. The Kumon Method teaches one math concept at a time and helps students practice using the concept through worksheets. After kids master that concept, then they can move to the next concept. In this way, students are able to build on their math skills and understanding step-by-step. Can a student do algebra or calculus without knowing their multiplication tables<\/a>? Perhaps \u2013 but it will take much longer than it should and will seem even more complicated than it is.<\/p>\n

Math Teaches Problem Solving <\/strong><\/h4>\n

Math is literally solving problems! Practicing math teaches logic and critical thinking as students work to find the answers to problems. Word problems, which many kids find especially challenging, boost creative thinking and reasoning skills. Math teaches students to analyze a problem and then solve it. That\u2019s a valuable skill. Being able to solve complex math problems also boosts students\u2019 confidence in their abilities to solve other types of problems and tackle a variety of challenges, both academic and otherwise.<\/p>\n

Math Determines Budgets <\/strong><\/h4>\n

Teens and college students are fond of noting that \u201cAdulting is hard.\u201d It\u2019s even harder for those who have poor math skills. At any age or stage of life, it\u2019s essential for anyone living on their own to build a household budget. Adulting, and adult budgeting, means computing how much a person can afford for rent or a mortgage, groceries or a car payment. Adults also need to be able to calculate a tip for a waiter or determine how much of a particular ingredient is needed to cook dinner. Math makes budgeting possible, and it fosters independence.<\/p>\n

Math Fuels the Business World<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Not every kid wants to grow up to be a mathematician. Math plays a fundamental role in many professions and industries, however. Anyone who is going into a science field \u2013 from doctors to architects \u2013 needs strong math skills. Math also is used by many occupations that are not as obvious \u2013 from a plumber, who must calculate how much pipe is needed to connect water lines, to a reporter explaining a tax increase to her readers, to a museum worker figuring out the proper height to hang a painting. And business owners in any line of work must be able to balance their books between revenues and costs, profits and losses, salaries and benefits.<\/p>\n

Math makes the world go \u2018round in a logical and efficient way. The next time a kid asks, \u201cWhen will I use this in real life?\u201d tell them how many times you\u2019ve crunched numbers in the last day or week.
