About the Center

Introduction

Welcome to our Kumon Math and Reading Center. For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program.

Ø  Full Month Program: Enrollment is month to month, with no partial month discounts(except at initial enrollment). Students should continue daily Kumon practice while on holiday/vacation, with parents providing 2 weeks advance notice regarding month long absences.

Ø  Monthly Classes: Students are typically provided with eight classes per month. Make-up classes are not provided in the event of illness. For certain minor holidays,make-up classes may be provided to impacted students; however, make-up classes are not provided for major holidays. The classroom is generally closed for a two-week winter recess each year, with no make-up classes provided.

Ø  Absence:Ten-day notice should also be provided in the event of transfer or discontinuance. In accordance with Kumon Policy, absences of greater than one month require re-registration at a cost of $50 per student. Reassessment may also be required.

Ø  Kumon Conduct: Students shall be treated respectfully in the Kumon classroom and shall behave respectfully toward their instructor, classroom tutors/aides, and other classmates. In the event a student is not capable of behaving appropriately in the classroom, the instructor shall attempt to coordinate with parents/guardians for the necessary behavior change; however, the instructor reserves the right to temporarily or permanently dismiss a student who is not capable of managing their conduct and no refund shall be provided.

Open Classroom: Please remain nearby to receive your child immediately after class. We are unable to    ensure that all children are paired with their guardian upon departure. Please coordinate pick-up arrangements clearly with your child as we cannot detain them in the classroom. When in doubt, we will ask them to remain in the lobby area, and we are not responsible for students who leave the classroom. We cannot escort children to the restroom. Please encourage use of the restroom prior to class.

Home Study: Like practicing an instrument or coaching athletes, Kumon requires consistency and dedication for maximum benefits. Please establish a distraction free place for Kumon study time to occur daily. Depending on your child’s age and Kumon level, homework may range from ten minutes to thirty minutes per subject per day. Early learners and new students will require support as they complete their homework worksheets; however, the goal is for all Kumon students to become capable of working on their assignments independently.

Kumon Journey: For Kumon to prove successful, the student must be willing to learn and complete their assignments as scheduled, the guardian must be supportive of the student’s Kumon home study and class time, and the instructor must provide thoughtful lesson planning. Periodically, the instructor will request a conference, either by phone or in person, to discuss your child’s progress.

Student Wellness: Students must wear a face mask while inside the classroom and will begin each class day using hand sanitizer (provided in the classroom). Tables and chairs will be wiped down with Lysol or similar disinfectant between each student use. For the health of all Kumon students, any student with symptoms that might be illness related, such as fever, dry or productive cough, or nasal discharge, should not attend regular class sessions. If any symptoms are of concern to the Instructor Lead Tutor, parents will be contacted and expected to pick-up their child promptly. During periods of illness, families are encouraged and welcome to coordinate work pick-up in the event the student is well enough to do home study.

Student enrollment at Kumon of Santa Cruz indicates agreement with these policies and conduct expectations. As updated, notice shall be provided to parents via email.
