Josie’s Story

Josie is 10-years-old, studying three years above her grade level in the Kumon Program. In fact, she’s studying the same math material that her mom, who is an eighth grade teacher, teaches her students. Imagine that, a 10-year-old transforming equations, working with linear functions and simplifying monomials and polynomials. She’s well on her way to advanced algebraic expressions and she isn’t even in middle school yet.

One of the things that Josie likes most about Kumon is the fact that she’s studying above her grade level.

“Kumon gives me confidence because I know how strong of a student it has made me,” says Josie. “I know that I can do and learn anything if I do the work and practice daily. Kumon has taught me about the importance of focusing and to not be afraid of challenges, but to enjoy them and work through them because I know I can overcome anything.”

Josie embodies everything that Toru Kumon had in mind when he founded the Kumon Method. He felt that students would experience the true benefits of the Kumon Method if they acquired the study habits necessary for self-learning and advanced study.

Audrey's Kumon Journey

Audrey started Kumon seven years ago when she was in preschool. Audrey is a hard worker who, with consistency, is working three years above grade level in math studying pre-calculus and has completed the reading program when she was in 5th grade! Audrey has received two J by 6 globes for both math and reading. The J by 6 globes are given to student who have reached level J in Kumon, which is high school level curriculum by 6th grade.

In 2016, Audrey won the Oregon Battle of the Books Regional 1 by reading 16 books - five times! Audrey is currently working towards her black belt in Taekwondo by the end of the year and has won three gold medals for flying side kick board break in tournaments. Audrey enjoys reading, sewing, gardening, cooking, playing the piano, and drawing.

Giselle's story

Giselle D. began her Kumon journey at age 10 in fourth grade. Having been home schooled, she embraced the daily work and repetition of the Kumon format. Within a few weeks she was soaring through the worksheets with confidence while feeling nurtured by the spectacular staff of teachers. As a result of such immediate mentoring, she aspired to new found academic goals in both Math and Reading.

Now in 6th Grade, she is working almost four years above grade level in Math, as well as one year above in Reading.

When I watch my 11 year old daughter excelling in the math that I struggled with during high school, I get goosebumps every time. As a parent, it is the most joyous feeling at the end of the day to know that your child is so excited about education thanks to Kumon. The structure, repetition, testing and commitment to daily practice is the perfect recipe for dreams of an Ivy League college. My only regret is that we didn't start sooner!
