Josie’s Story

Josie

Josie is 10-years-old, studying three years above her grade level in the Kumon Program. In fact, she’s studying the same math material that her mom, who is an eighth grade teacher, teaches her students. Imagine that, a 10-year-old transforming equations, working with linear functions and simplifying monomials and polynomials. She’s well on her way to advanced algebraic expressions and she isn’t even in middle school yet.

One of the things that Josie likes most about Kumon is the fact that she’s studying above her grade level.

“Kumon gives me confidence because I know how strong of a student it has made me,” says Josie. “I know that I can do and learn anything if I do the work and practice daily. Kumon has taught me about the importance of focusing and to not be afraid of challenges, but to enjoy them and work through them because I know I can overcome anything.”

Josie embodies everything that Toru Kumon had in mind when he founded the Kumon Method. He felt that students would experience the true benefits of the Kumon Method if they acquired the study habits necessary for self-learning and advanced study.

Parent testimony - Yue Y.

My older daughter often made careless mistakes when solving math problems during her elementary school years. When she was in 7th grade, a friend suggested that I enroll her in Kumon to address this issue. She joined Kumon for a year, and during that time, she significantly reduced her tendency to make careless mistakes. Later, she successfully skipped algebra when she advanced to 8th grade and made the school’s team for the state MATHCOUNTS competition.

My younger daughter rarely made careless mistakes, but she solved math problems slowly, which affected her performance in math competitions. To help her improve, I enrolled her in Kumon when she was in 6th grade. After more than six months of practice, her speed improved dramatically. She also joined the school’s MATHCOUNTS team and now feels much more confident in her math abilities.

Kumon has greatly enhanced my daughters' math fluency, particularly in terms of accuracy and speed. My younger daughter used the electronic mode, which was more convenient than the paper-based version my older daughter used, as the electronic worksheets were graded promptly by Kumon staff.

I am especially grateful for Vivian's patient and timely guidance, which played a crucial role in my daughters' progress.
