Kush's Story

My name is Kush. My sister, Diya, and I were born and brought up and went to school in Mangalam village, Gujarat, India. I did not know or speak English. I came from India on July 12, 2013. It was summer break then. In September I joined elementary school in 2nd grade. School was very confusing for me because all the subjects were hard. I could not read or write in English. My cousins Riya and Rishi were enrolled in Kumon. So, my parents decided to enroll me and sister in Kumon, too. I started from the very beginning in Level 7A in reading and 4A in Math. It has been about two and half years now. School has become easy for me since I started in Kumon. Now I’m in Level E doing fractions in Math and finishing Level C1 in Reading. Reading is still hard for me. There are many new words I struggle with. Some I don’t know how to pronounce and some I don’t know the meaning. Mrs. Johnson makes me read aloud and practice spelling every center day. But I’m happy I can do math faster and better than any of my 5th grade classmates. I’m also in honor roll in School and Kumon. I’m very happy about that.

Diya's Story

I’m Kush's sister, Diya. When we came to this country I started 5th grade that year. I did not understand a word of what my teacher was saying. They had to take me out of class and tutor me at a reading recovery program. Then, I enrolled in Kumon along with my brother. I started in Level 2A in Math and 4A in Reading. Every day at home I would read my Kumon packet to my cousin, Riya. She was the only one to help me at home. Now, I’m in level G in Math doing algebra and D11 in Reading. My brother and I have improved so much in school. I do not know how I would have come this far in school without Kumon practice. I would like to thank all the Kumon staff for helping me and my brother in making school easy.
