About the Center

Introduction

Welcome to  Kumon Math and Reading Ann Arbor - West Center. For more than 50 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program, click here.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program, click here.

Policies

Hours:

Class hours are Monday and Thursday, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please arrive no later than 6:15 p.m. to ensure your child will complete his or her work by 7:00. Zoom Class days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays 5-7pm.

Classroom Policy:

Our Kumon Center classroom is a quiet place for learning. We ask that students and parents please be mindful of this and speak in a library tone when in the main classroom. We welcome the opportunity to answer parents' questions but in order for our students to get the most out of their Kumon session, we ask that if parents have questions or concerns, need to request work for an upcoming absence/vacation, need to change contact info, or discuss scheduling, that this be done outside of class hours.

Kumon Homework:

Parents are responsible for ensuring that students turn in their completed Kumon homework each week; failure to do so will slow down a student's progress, both because the student will not get adequate practice, and because if a student does not complete the homework, he or she may be doing the worksheets out of order, which will hinder his or her understanding of the material. Students should have one homework packet for each non-class date, unless you have set up another workload arrangement with Mrs. Okafor.

Please check your child’s work to be turned in to avoid these common pitfalls.

Home Grading:

Kumon parents are encouraged to home-grade their student's work. Students whose parents home-grade their work often move through the program faster, both because they learn from their mistakes more quickly, and because parental engagement can help students feel motivated and successful. Home grading does not have to be all or nothing – parents can take grading books home and grade as often as they feel able. Grading books are also useful for parents to “spot-check” their child’s work, so that they can contact Mrs. Okafor if they notice a problem. Please see Mrs. Okafor.

Communication:

Please provide us with an email that you check regularly; most of our communications are done through email. These communications include periodic reminders of upcoming events, as well as newsletters. Please read the newsletter for important announcements each month. Parents who have questions about their child’s work or progress, or any other concerns, are encouraged to schedule a conference with Mrs. Okafor. Conferences are held quarterly. A Signup Genius link is sent out via email to schedule conferences. However, in between conference times, please call or email Mrs. Okafor with any concerns.

Child / Center Safety:

In order to ensure our students’ safety when leaving Kumon, parents need to be present at the center when their children finish their work. It is the policy of Kumon Ann Arbor West that students remain inside the center until a parent or guardian comes to pick them up. If your child needs to call you for a ride home, this is permitted, however, you must tell your child that they must stay in the lobby of the center until you arrive to pick them up. If your child needs to walk home from the center, I will need you to fill out a form saying that they have permission to do so.

Holidays:

Kumon Ann Arbor West will be closed on National Holidays that fall on a class day, as well as for a week during the Christmas holidays. Kumon Ann Arbor West may also be closed for two weeks during the year, typically Spring Break and one week in the summer. When the center is closed, students will automatically receive enough work to carry them through the closure, and until the next class, at their last class before the closure.

Kept Work:

You have the option to keep your child’s completed Kumon packets. If you wish to keep your child’s work, please let Mrs. Okafor know at the time of enrollment (if possible) so that we can get the process of saving the work going right away. Because of COVID, you will be required to grade and complete the score card for your child.

Missed Classes:

If your child misses a Kumon class, his or her work will be placed in the box outside the center for pick up. Please try to pick up the work to keep your child on track. Daily practice is the cornerstone of the Kumon program and making Kumon a priority will produce the best results for your child and help to grow their self-confidence.

Absent Students/Reinstatement:

Please note that it is Kumon’s policy that if you take more than 1 month off of Kumon in a 12 month period, a new registration fee will be required to reinstate your student.

Cancellation:

If you intend to discontinue Kumon for any reason, we require written notice (email is okay) in the month prior to your last month. For example, giving notice in June would signify that you intend to leave at the end of July (and you would therefore still be responsible for July’s tuition.)Planning for our students’ work begins a month in advance, so requests received less than one month in advance cannot be honored. For families paying by check, the last month’s tuition will then be applied to the month following the month in which notice was given.
