When we started at Kumon, our daughter and son were barely on grade level for reading and math. We were spending extra time with them in the evenings reviewing their assignments and assisting them with homework, but this did not seem to be enough. While no one that we spoke to said that the Kumon curriculum would be easy or that our kids would love it, we committed to the program for both subjects. At the start, there were certainly plenty of tears and complaining; however, our children quickly learned the importance of practice. Like any of the sports they play, they knew they had to practice if they wanted to become better. Now when asked, they will both happily tell you that they attribute their success in school largely to Kumon. This is because, being several grades ahead in math, they often finish assignments early allowing them to use that time to work on other subjects—which means that they rarely have homework (this is something the love!). Without the Kumon instructors’ consistent encouragement and support, we would likely have found reasons why we just “didn’t have time” or “couldn’t make it work.” However, if we could go back in time, we would have started the Kumon curriculum even earlier. My child was having issues with reading and handwriting at the beginning of the school year. In order to prevent him from falling further behind, we enrolled him into Kumon. Since last October, he has gone up 2 reading levels and he enjoys reading and learning.
