Class Timing
-
Tuesday, Thursday 3:00 PM -7:00 PM
-
Duration of class – New Kumon Students: Kumon is an individualized program of study. Student class and homework time varies. Brand new students working at their “just right level” often spend less time in class than longer-term students. This helps students adjust to Kumon. Initially, expect 15-20 minutes per subject. This time will increase as students move into more complex concepts and levels.
-
Duration of class: Experienced Kumon Students: Students studying new concepts or in more advanced study can expect to spend 30 minutes per subject just like at home. Please work with the Instructor to reduce schedule conflicts with Kumon class, and to adjust workload to balance Kumon goals with student activities.
-
Kumon Center Office Hours: By appointment only. Text to schedule: 929-269-5004
-
We are open all year round: summer, school vacations, half-days etc. unless notified by e-mail and/or posted in the waiting area. Our schedule of future closings is also posted in the waiting area.
Class Expectations
-
Students are expected to attend class twice per week. Excessive absences and missing assignments will cause students to fall behind and lose motivation.
-
Kumon of Marine Park uses a classroom approach for instruction. Student independence and self-learning are core principles of the Kumon Method which involves individualized self-learning, not one-on-one tutoring.
-
The Instructor and Assistants circulate through the classroom to provide assistance, hints and tips to students. However, our goal is to help without helping – hints and examples, not answers. Students are also asked to try and figure out the problem on their own using provided examples. This stimulates self-learning.
-
Students are expected to exchange their own homework, and return completed and graded assignments. We will assign them a seat when they enter the classroom.
-
Waiting room guests need to be conscious of maintaining a good study environment (“Library quiet”) and parents are asked to set up an appointment to discuss all questions outside of class time.
-
We expect students to fully complete assignments and accomplish corrections before being excused. This is to maximize learning. Assistants are trained to avoid excessive numbers of corrections in class.
-
The classroom flow is as follows: check-in and drop off completed work, enter the classroom and begin working (write start time and full name), complete assignment (write finish time), correct errors (get assistance if necessary), depart Kumon.
Homework Expectations
-
Whether you are an athlete, musician, or Kumon Math and Reading student, daily practice is essential for success. Failure to progress and meet learning goals is generally caused by an inconsistent Kumon routine. One assignment for math and reading must be completed daily.
-
Completion times: Kumon is not a “beat the clock” program. Rather, completion time is used to help measure mastery. Tracking completion time at home is an important factor in the Kumon Center’s lesson planning. Use a clock, and monitor your student to ensure their times reflect their total homework time based on the Standard Completion Time (SCT) from the table of learning materials.
-
Active parental participation: The top students in Kumon have parents who participate in their student’s Kumon study. Setting the right study environment, providing encouragement, and student supervision will maximize parents' return on investment. Parents must grade student work same day and return to student for corrections.
-
The Kumon Center will help parents work around vacations and absences by assigning more homework for longer periods of time when class attendance is not possible. Please give one week notice of planned absences. Prolonged or frequent absences will also adversely affect your child's progress. There are absolutely no make-up class days if a student is absent or if Kumon is closed.
-
Ideally, the student’s homework experience should emulate the class room experience. Quiet and focused study, emphasis on independence, self-learning and positive reinforcement.
-
All homework should be stapled after completing the packet by date in the left corner and organized in date order. This must be done before entering the classroom.
Parent Communication
We strive to provide parents with timely, meaningful feedback. Please schedule meetings every three months and upon enrollment (a 30-day follow up meeting). We want to ensure that all your needs are being met and you are fully understanding the Kumon Program and its benefits. Please do not expect progress at the 30-day meeting. Our goal is to get rid of any gaps he/she may have, get your child to grade level as soon as possible and have them working above grade level. Each child will take a different amount of time to get to that point. Kumon is a lifestyle not a quick fix for a test. If you have any questions please e-mail us at [email protected] or call (347) 275-2009.
Class Schedules
Class is available twice a week at the selected schedule for approximately 30 minutes per subject. Students are expected to complete worksheets/tablet study daily at home and at the Center. If you are not able to come during your allotted time or need to change your scheduled time, please call the center to make arrangements in advance. If you arrive after your scheduled time, you may be asked to pick up work for at-home completion or the study time will be cut short for your child. Please arrive 5 minutes prior to your scheduled start time. Your child can walk themselves into class at that time. Class is a time for instruction of new concepts, observation of students, and student feedback. Communication with parents is extremely important to us but, please plan to talk to us outside of class hours.
