ALKA GARG
Alka received a Bachelors in Economics from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana and a Masters in Accounting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She began her career in tax accounting at KPMG but quickly realized her passion lay elsewhere. Alka began researching decision making and learned that people’s most impactful experiences happen at a young age. People compound on their prior experiences to build their knowledge and make future decisions. She learned that people who lacked primary nurturing and attention had the greatest difficulty in leading an independent life. She wanted to create a positive experience for her children, so education became her form of expression. In 2004, Alka opened her Kumon Center and was able to help kids who may have fallen behind in school, yet still have great unrealized potential. Alka strives to instill a strong work ethic in these students by consistently assigning work and challenging them by introducing new concepts and encouraging efficient approaches to the material, even if it contradicts the approach shown in school. She has seen her students begin to develop new favorite classroom subjects - a sign of greater autonomy - that they’ve used in future decision making. Alka feels a sense of fulfillment, as she is not only able to impact a student’s education, but create an autonomous personality who's willing to challenge their surroundings.
