About Your Instructor

Samuel Song

Sam Song is the dedicated Owner and Lead Instructor of the Kumon Math and Reading Center of East Spokane. With close to 30 years of experience spanning both public and private sectors, Sam and his passionate team are committed to helping young learners—from preschoolers as young as 3 to high school students—thrive in math and reading.

Educated in China and the United States, Sam began his career as a teacher in China before immigrating to the U.S., where he became a proud citizen. His multifaceted background includes managing Panda Express franchise stores, serving in leadership roles at the City of Spokane (including Acting Director of Riverfront Park), contributing to Spokane International Academy, and working with Family Impact Network (through Empire Health Foundation), a regional non-profit supporting families across 20 counties in Eastern Washington.

Sam was instrumental in bringing the award-winning Washington State Chinese Lantern Festival (which drew over 80,000 visitors and evolved into Northwest Winterfest) to Spokane. One poignant moment during the festival—a young boy exclaiming to his mother, "Mom, this is the happiest night of my life!"—deeply moved Sam and reinforced his realization that making a positive impact on children's lives is what fulfills him most.

Kumon's philosophy and self-learning methodology resonate profoundly with Sam, providing the ideal platform to mentor and inspire the next generation. Reflecting on his own learning journey and the inspiration he drew from his teachers, Sam has channeled his lifelong passion for education into guiding students toward independence, confidence, and academic mastery. Like many of the children he serves, his own daughter has long been a successful Kumon student, experiencing firsthand the program's transformative benefits.

At Kumon of East Spokane, Sam and his team create a supportive environment where every child can unlock their unlimited potential.

“Kumon has helped me to better handle making mistakes. Before I started Kumon, I had a breakdown every time I made a mistake but because Kumon is so challenging, I have learned that it's okay to make mistakes because you can learn from them.”
Calvin

“Kumon has taught me to persevere. There are times when the assignments are hard, but I am determined to work through the challenging assignments. Getting independent practice on my assignments is a great way to prepare me for times in life when I may have to work alone.”
