About the Center

Introduction

Welcome to our Kumon Math and Reading Center. For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program.

BASICS OF THE KUMON PROGRAM

  • Kumon worksheets must be dated, timed, and completed daily.
  • Kumon aims for sustainable student success, we are not a “quick fix”.
  • We provide ample practice through repetition, with a focus on mastery.
  • Kumon students are expected to attend the center on all scheduled days.

CENTER ATTENDANCE
  • Students attend Kumon classes twice a week for approximately 25-30 minute sessions per subject. Students may finish early or may need extra time. Tuition is charged for the individualized instruction and materials received, not minutes or hours spent in the center. You will receive worksheets for every day, but there are no refunds for missed classes or work and there will be no makeup classes.
  • Center attendance is important for instructor observation of students to determine “the just right level” and to determine a student’s lesson plan. Students are expected to work just as independently at the center as they will at home.
  • The center is designed to provide the ideal study environment for students to complete assignments. Student behavior should adhere to keeping this ideal study environment. Students must not disrupt other students.
  • Students should arrive at the center at their scheduled appointment time. Students arriving outside of their scheduled appointment time will have to wait for an available opening or pick up work.
  • If you know that a class will be missed, please call or e-mail the center prior to the end of class (7 PM Monday - Wednesday; 6 PM Thursday) to request to pick up work.
  • Please be available to pick up your child when he/she finishes their classwork and leaves the classroom. There will be no one on duty to supervise them after they leave the classroom.

CENTER CLOSINGS
  • Kumon of Spring Valley Village is open throughout the year, except for the dates on the closure/holiday schedule, but your child will still receive work for that time period. (You will receive an advance notice of closure via email or signs posted in the waiting area).
  • Kumon of Spring Valley Village will also be closed if Spring Branch ISD closes due to inclement weather, or other emergencies.

TUITION
  • Tuition shall be paid by an automatic EFT charge of a credit card or automatic draft of your checking account. Tuition is processed before the 1st of the month.
  • Tuition is $170 per subject per month per student. There is a one-time registration fee of $80 per student and a materials fee of $30 per student.
  • Enrollment fees are due at the time of enrollment.
  • We accept: debit cards, credit cards and EFT (electronic funds transfer). We do not accept cash payments.
  • Tuition is non-refundable once a student has started receiving work assignments for the month.
  • If payments are received after the 5th of the month, a $20 late fee must be included with your payment.
  • A $20 fee will be charged for rejected credit cards and declined electronic fund transfers.
  • Upon enrolling, the materials fee, enrollment fee, and 1st month tuition are due. We process tuition on the 1st of the month. For example, tuition for January is charged on January 1st.
  • If you wish to discontinue Kumon, you must let us know in writing 30 days prior to stop payment for the following month.

BOOKS
  • The Kumon Recommended Reading List (RRL) is a list of books intended to help Kumon students find books that they will enjoy reading, and to encourage them to read books from a wide range of genres and styles.
  • If your child misplaces or damages a book, you will be asked to purchase another copy to replace the center copy. Kumon cannot accept moderately/heavily marked up replacements. If you prefer, you can pay us directly and we will purchase the replacement copy.

VACATION
  • Kumon works best when study is year-round. While we strongly discourage leaves of absence from the program, Kumon allows one calendar month per calendar year of absence without penalty. Vacation must be an entire calendar month.
  • If you wish to take a one-month vacation from Kumon, we require a 30 day advanced written notice.

COMMUNICATING WITH CENTER STAFF
  • Kumon instructors welcome communication and encourage parents to ask questions about their child’s progress. Call, email or book an appointment online to schedule a meeting or parent conference. The instructor needs to focus on students and cannot address any questions during class time.
  • Our class hours are Monday through Wednesday from 3 PM to 7 PM and Thursday from 3 PM to 6 PM.
  • Only students may enter the Kumon classroom.
  • Please check your child’s Kumon pouch for notices from the center.
