How We're Keeping Your Kids Safe! (COVID-19 Update)
The Kumon Math and Reading Center of Laredo understands that our students’ health and safety is not just your top priority, but ours as well. We are continuing to monitor the latest developments of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and will act accordingly as we see fit. While we understand how difficult the adjustments have been for parents, we want to act as a beacon for learning in the community.
In order to serve this goal, the following are just a few of the ways we are helping to do our part in preventing the spread of COVID-19.
-
Hand sanitizer available throughout the Center for ease of access & frequent cleaning of common areas.
-
Contactless temperature reading for students upon entry.
-
CDC recommended 6-foot of distance in between student desks and staff members.
Instructing your children of the following standard precautions can help reduce the risk of infection. Here are a few tips from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention:
-
Teach your children to wash their hands often. Washing with soap and warm water for at least 30 seconds is ideal. (That’s about as long as it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice).
-
Teach your children the proper use of hand sanitizer in case they do not have access to a sink for washing their hands. Gels, rubs, and hand wipes all work well, as long as they contain at least 60% alcohol and if the hands are not visibly soiled. Hand wipes must be disposed of properly. Always read and follow label instructions when using hand sanitizer.
-
Teach your children to keep their hands away from their face and avoid touching their mouth, nose, or eyes when possible.
-
Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into their sleeve or the inside of their elbow – not their hands. If a tissue is used, it should be thrown out immediately.
If you suspect your child has contracted any illness, it is important that he/she does not attend school, Kumon, childcare, or anywhere else other people would be exposed to germs.
Thank you for your help in keeping our children and our Kumon Center healthy. If we all practice good hygiene, health officials believe we can limit the spread of the coronavirus and other viral illnesses in our homes, schools, and other places where people gather.
How We're Different Than Tutoring!
-
Tutoring may not get to the root of the problem.
When a child needs help with math or reading, tutoring often focuses on addressing an immediate need. The Kumon Method recognizes that a child's struggle likely stems from having missed earlier, fundamental learning.
-
Kumon identifies where your child's learning started to fall behind, while a tutor may not.
To fix the root of your child's struggles, the starting point needs to be correct. While a tutor may begin tutoring a fifth grader on fifth-grade material, Kumon may start them at a different level.
-
Tutoring is passive learning. Kumon teaches self-learning.
A tutor often sits with a child and explains how to solve a problem. This makes the child a passive learner, listening to an explanation with no guarantee the concept has been fully grasped. Conversely, self-learning in Kumon keeps your children actively engaged. They learn by studying examples that equip them to do the work on their own.
