About the Center

Introduction

Located at the Mānoa Japanese Language School (MJLS) nestled in the heart of Mānoa Valley in Honolulu, the Mānoa Kumon Center has served the local communities since 1991, providing after-school to students from private schools, as well as, Manoa and Noelani Elementary, supplemental academic enrichment programs to thousands of students and families over the years. We are devoted to promoting a positive learning environment and nurturing a life-long love of learning while developing and maximizing the potential in each individual student.

The Kumon program is centered on developing self-confidence and the capability to take on new challenges and learn independently through repetition driven mastery. We strive to instill in our students the desire to achieve and aspire for excellence as well as instill the motivation and hunger for them to continue to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, the Kumon program aims to cultivate a life-long love of learning and the process of self-improvement.

The Kumon Program is comprised of two general components:

1) The Kumon Math Program, which is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. Click here for more information about the Kumon Math Program

2) The Kumon Reading Program, which begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. Click here for more information about the Kumon Reading Program

Each student advances through the program at their own pace, under a regime and scope of work devised on a targeted, individual basis by our veteran instruction team. Our team’s emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. Instruction staff will monitor each student’s progress to ensure mastery before moving on to a new concept. Through building a strong academic foundation and developing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, our students are uniquely positioned to develop the skills and acumen necessary to achieve their true potential.

Policies

As we deal with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is important that we do our part to mitigate its spread.

Center Cleanliness Policy

We are taking many steps to limit student interaction and keep the center clean. We ask that you support our efforts by following the guidelines regarding student hygiene within the center cleanliness policy. Please remember that these rules are meant to protect all staff members, students, and families who visit the center.

In an effort to mitigate the spread of airborne virus or infection, our Kumon center will:

Minimize student density: Schedule or alter class hours so only 1/3 of the seats are filled at a time. We will gradually increase to 2/3 capacity over time when it is deemed safe by the City & County of Honolulu, State of Hawai'i, and the CDC. Seat one student per table unless someone from the same household is also signed up for the same appointment time.

Fully Disinfect Classroom: Regularly disinfect commonly touched/shared surfaces throughout class time. After each appointment is over, desks, tables, and areas that were touched will be disinfected.

Utilize Personal Protection Equipment: We will require anyone who enters the center to wear a mask. Temperature of all staff members, students, and anyone entering will be taken upon entry to the center.

We ask that Parents and Students support our efforts by:

Having students bring their own pencil and erasers.

All completed worksheets should be labeled with your child’s name, date, and time, and separated by subject prior to coming to your appointment. Worksheets will be collected OUTSIDE of the classroom. Kumon Bags will also remain OUTSIDE of the class.

Once seated in the class, students will remain in the seat until they are ready to leave.

Encouraging proper hygiene. Anyone entering the classroom should use hand sanitizer upon entry.

Our waiting area will be limited to one parent or guardian per student/household. In the waiting area, please use social distancing measures (6-feet apart) and for the consideration of others, wear a mask.

Students should wait outside until they are called in by a staff member.

Remind your children to keep their hands away from their face and avoid touching their mouth, nose, or eyes when possible. Remind your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into their sleeve or inside their elbow – not their hands. If a tissue is used, it should be thrown out immediately.

If you suspect your child or someone in your household has contracted any illness or has a temperature over 100.4, it is important that your child does NOT attend Kumon until the person is no longer symptomatic. If your family or someone you have been in contact with has returned from off island, or your family has had any close contact with a confirmed or probable confirmed case of COVID-19, your child will not be allowed to come to class for 2 weeks. Thank you for your help in keeping our children and our Kumon Center healthy.

Our goal is to support your children in their Kumon journey and limit interruptions to their study as much as possible. Continuous learning is the key to success in the Kumon Program, and we aim to support each of our students in achieving their goals.

Please review the guidelines and center changes above and feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have. We ask for your cooperation in maintaining a clean and healthy environment and look forward to welcoming you all back to the center!
