About the Center

Introduction

Welcome to the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Merrick.

For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. At the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Merrick, we strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up, or is just beginning his or her academic career, the Kumon Method is designed to help him or her develop a life-long love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

•Each student progresses at his or her own pace though an individualized worksheet lesson plan established by the instructor Steve Dershowitz
•Students do daily assignments that take about 30 minutes per subject, in sessions two days a week at the Center, and the other five at home
•The worksheets provide examples of how to solve each problem, enabling students to figure out new concepts on their own
•Each worksheet teaches a lesson that's one small step more advanced than the lesson before, so students progress smoothly and gain confidence with each new success

At the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Merrick, children become better, more confident learners. For many children, the key to ongoing academic success is a spark ignited by a new-found confidence. Often, it is that confidence which propels students to academic successes which they have not had previously.

The Kumon Math and Reading Center of Merrick provides a friendly, comfortable environment in which children are given the opportunity to succeed at whatever level they may happen to be. They are not judged because they are behind the curve nor teased because they are ahead. Their achievements are recognized by placing their names on our wall of success and at a yearly awards ceremony.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. All children are capable of performing advanced mathematics; at Kumon of Merrick, we help them reach that potential. For more information about the Kumon Math Program, click here.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension and literacy. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program, click here.
