About the Center

Introduction

Welcome to our Kumon Math and Reading Center. For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program.

Welcome to the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Northfield, NJ.

We are very excited about the opportunity to work with your child. In order to make you and your child’s experience with Kumon a positive and successful educational experience, we have created the following Center Policies and Procedures. Please review them carefully, as they are designed to provide you with essential information about the Kumon Program and our Center and to ensure smooth progress for all Kumon Students. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

1. Class Days and Times:

Monday      3:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Tuesday     3:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Thursday    3:30PM --7:30 PM
Friday         3:30 PM – 7:30 PM

(Or as decided by Center Management as needed.)

Class is available twice a week for 30 minutes per subject. Students are expected to complete daily worksheets at home and at the Center.

It is expected that students arrive early enough to allow time to complete their class work, 30 minutes prior to the end of class for one subject and 60 minutes for two subjects.

Class is a time for instruction of new concepts and observation of students. Communication with parents is extremely important to us, but please plan to talk to the Instructor outside of class times. Parents can leave their phone number and two convenient times to call. Sending an email to the Instructor at [email protected] is also an option.

2. Absences:

If a student is absent from class, work can be picked up or dropped off using the pick-up/drop-off box in the front of the Center.

Please notify the Instructor about planned vacations or absences one week in advance by completing the vacation absence form. In the event of an unplanned absence, please call the Instructor by noon of the day of class and we will prepare the work for you to pick up from the pick-up/drop-off box in front of the Center.

Forms are also provided for adjusting a student’s workload (the number of worksheets a student does each day). If you would like to request a change in workload, please fill out this form and submit it the week before you would like the adjustment to be made. Please note that it is at the discretion of the Instructor to accommodate this request, and the Instructor may ask for a brief conference to discuss the desired adjustment.

3. Tuition Payment and Late Policy:

Tuition is $120 per subject each month. The initial (one-time) registration fee is $50 per student. We require a $120 deposit per subject for the new admission which will be the last month's tuition if you want to discontinue the program after six months.

Tuition payment is due on first day of enrollment and then the 1st day of each month the child is enrolled. If tuition payment is not submitted by the 10th of the month, a $5 late fee will be assessed and is to be added to the tuition due that month.

4. Kumon at Home:

When students do their Kumon work at home, it is recommended that it is done at a scheduled time and a specific work area each day. It is beneficial if there are no distractions so that students may concentrate on their work. Students should not be expected to do more than one homework packet per day (i.e., skipping work on some days, and doubling up on other days), as this may fatigue the student which can result in poor performance and lack of motivation.

5. Center Etiquette:

In order to make the Center a positive learning environment for each student, we ask that all cell phone ringers are turned off while in the Center. We also ask that everyone keeps the noise volume to a minimum. Parents are required to wait in the parent waiting area during class time.

6. Center Hours Conference with appointment:

Monday 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM
Tuesday 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM
Wednesday 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Thursday 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Friday 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM

Student/Parent Orientation can be schedule upon appointment on business days of the week.

7. Emergency/Emergency Closings:

In case of extreme weather conditions, please call the Center to arrange for homework pick-up. If there is an Emergency Center Closing, there will be a message on the Center answering machine. We will follow the local school districts closing for extreme conditions.

8. Record Start and End Time on Worksheets:

All worksheets beyond the first couple of levels in our curriculum have a time requirement. Work can only be evaluated if time and percentages are recorded properly. Work will not be considered complete without times and will therefore need to be reassigned.

9. Class Supplies:

Students must bring their own pencils and erasers in order to prevent the spread of germs, such as flu, colds, etc. Also, we wish our students to learn about responsibility and being prepared.

10. Instructor/Student Driven Program:

Although parent feedback about homework progress is welcome and helpful, the final decision regarding homework, lesson planning, and progress is made by the Instructor.

11. Year-Round Program:

One of the benefits of the Kumon Program is that it is a year-round program. This will enable students to practice a little bit each day and increase retention of skills.

If you would like to hold an additional conference during the interim, please contact me and I will be happy to arrange a meeting outside of class time.

Student progress graphs will be given at time of parent conference. Level Completion Reports will be given after each Level is completed.
