About Your Instructor
DENISE ENSIGN
I started out as a Kumon mom first. Our boys were enrolled in private school when we started them in Kumon. We felt they needed more practice on many concepts they were just exposed to in school; this was especially true with math. We eventually took them out of private school and kept them enrolled in Kumon’s Math and Reading programs.
My instructor journey began in 2008. It is impossible not to be a firm believer in the power of long-term study in Kumon. I have seen it with my children’s success in life, and now the many children I have helped over the years as an instructor. I know what must be developed in the foundation levels of the program(s) to ensure students can, and do, study ahead of grade level.
I have now graduated from being a Kumon mom to being a Kumon grandma. My three-year-old grandson started the reading program this year. He loves it. As an instructor, I know his academic career is just beginning. It is important that he progresses at his pace like all students should be allowed to.
Most parents are surprised to walk into a Kumon classroom and not see a whiteboard, to realize that children of all ages are in the classroom at the same time. This is because in Kumon, each child has individualized lesson planning. As an instructor, I can say the "perfect" class is to just stand and watch students with their heads down, pencil moving while they complete that day's assignment. Even those doing something new, ahead of grade level, have learned they just have to study examples and apply what they already know to the new concept. Then it is just about obtaining enough practice to become confident in solving the new concept. Kumon is about mastery of, not just exposure to, of concepts being studied. This is how, with time, students are eagerly studying concepts that are one to three plus years ahead of grade level.
Over the years I have had dozens of Math and Reading program completers. Not all students stay to complete the program(s), but those who do, don’t regret their years of study in Kumon. When former students, completers or not, reach out to share with me what they are doing, they all say the same thing, Kumon made college easy. It is wonderful to hear that my former students are studying such a variety of areas from business, to psychology, to various types of engineering, and, no surprise, pre-med and dentistry.
My staff and I work hard to help each child on their Kumon journey. Each child's journey takes time and effort by the student, by the parents and, of course, myself and my staff. Children learn so many important life lessons during their Kumon journey. These lessons help prepare them for high school, college and before you know it, life.
Please come and see what Kumon can do to ensure your child is studying strongly and confidently in school.
