Our center is inclusive towards all identities, age groups, and cultures. Starting from as early as age three and up, Kumon will enable your children to get a head start, master concepts, and succeed academically in math, reading, and writing. Our Kumon method provides an individualized lesson plan for each student, moving along the student’s pace so as to not overwhelm him or her.
Program Overview
The Kumon learning system has a curriculum that spans over twenty levels for reading and math-- both of which are composed of short assignments to encourage steady but gradual progress. Rather than assigning materials and lessons based on the grade level, we gauge the status of your child’s comprehension and understanding for each respective subject in order to assign relevant assignments that are best suitable for your child on an individual level. By doing so in small repeated increments, each Kumon student will develop a mastery and complete understanding of a concept before advancing onto the next level. This provides the students with a strong foundational base which makes the learning of more advanced concepts easier. Ultimately, the goal is to help maximize your child’s potential to perform well in school through cultivating better study habits, improving concentration levels, and increasing self-confidence--all of which are necessary components to encourage independent thinking.
Unlike other traditional tutoring or one-on-one services, Kumon’s method is designed for self-study to cultivate independent learners. The students do their assignments in a study hall like environment with staff members occasionally coming by to check or grade the students’ progress. The method in which the students learn is by committing the concepts to memory through performing and doing, rather than listening and watching a teacher or tutor. Every student has the academic skills prevalent for school. Our goal is to enhance and foster those skills to mature in order to make school less confusing and stressful for each student.
Math Program
Beginning with preschool level, the students first start learning how to count and develop fine motor skills with writing exercise to improve pencil grip control. As the levels progress further into high school education, the lessons get progressively more advanced delving into algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.
Speed + Accuracy =Mastery
Worksheets are assigned for students to complete within a specific time frame with a perfect score to demonstrate mastery. Assignments are graded on site and returned back to the student for any possible corrections. When the student shows full understanding of the material, he or she is given a test before moving onto the next level.
Practice Makes Progress
To ensure that the student fully understands the material, the assignments are repeated until mastery is achieved. If the student takes either too long or makes too many errors or mistakes, then the student is expected to continue on that level until it becomes ingrained in his or her memory. In doing so, the student will have developed a strong foundation before moving onto more advanced concepts, which makes future material easier to comprehend.
Reading Program
The Kumon Reading Program is designed to improve the students’ reading comprehension through an individualized study plan. This program is divided into five sections which are word building, sentence building, paragraph development, summary, and critical reading. The goal of this program is to help students develop strong reading comprehension skills so that they will be able to read, understand, summarize, and analyze different forms of writing from various fields. By familiarizing themselves with diverse types of writing styles and skills through reading comprehension, the students are encouraged to emulate those same concepts into their own writing.
In addition to the reading comprehension, the curriculum also incorporates grammar lessons to enable the students to organize their thoughts in a clean and orderly manner. Following the reading sections are thorough comprehension questions pertaining to the reading to stimulate critical and analytical thinking. In order to maximize the student’s writing potential, grammar is a necessary component to produce meaningful and accurate answers that go beyond short and simple sentences.
The curriculum consists of letter recognition, phonics and vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure-- all of which is supplemented by exercises focusing on organizing information, paragraph structure, passage analysis, summary writings, and eventually critical analysis. In addition to these assignments, there is also a recommended reading list per level to encourage students to read a variety of books when there is free time.
Early Learners (3-6 years old students) Program
This program is catered towards young children of preschool age or those who require additional assistance learning the basics for reading and math. Generally our students in this program range from three to six years old. For those who have not yet experienced school in a traditional setting or environment, this program helps teach children to concentrate, follow instructions, and become successful students. Students in this program work alongside a Kumon staff member who provides one-on-one instructions and help during the duration of the session. Parents are also encouraged to work with the children at home to help gradually ease them into the process of learning and studying. For the pre-reading skills, we focus on teaching the letters of the alphabets including the shapes and sounds, vocabulary building, and acquiring the basic phonics skill sets necessary to become an effective reader. With pre-math skills, our curriculum focuses on learning and writing numbers, recognizing patterns, counting numbers beyond220, and understanding basic addition.
