About the Center

Introduction

Welcome to the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Scottsdale-Shea Scottsdale!

For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

OUR MISSION

At Kumon of Scottsdale-Shea, we aim to develop our students to their maximum potential. We wish to instill a love of learning in students that will stay with them for life. We begin this by building a strong foundation of the basics in math and reading which we will build upon for years to come.

THE KUMON PROGRAM

Kumon is a long-term foundation building program and is not intended to be a quick-fix for your child's academic needs. Unlike traditional tutoring programs, Kumon goes back and fills in any gaps in your students previous learning and strengthens the foundations upon which new concepts are built while advancing your child to a higher level. Each student works at their own pace on an individualized lesson plan that helps them become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each student's progress to ensure mastery before moving on to new concepts. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, your child has the potential to accomplish whatever he or she desires.

We encourage you to make a commitment to the Kumon program for a minimum of 12 months in order to achieve the desired results and allow your student to further excel in the classroom and life.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. Please click for more information about the Kumon Math Program

  • All students follow a scheduling system to ensure appropriate staffing so we can better observe and focus on our students.
  • Due to time constraints, we cannot offer make up sessions if a class is missed.
  • If the student is ill, please inform us ahead of time and we will prepare work for you to pickup.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

  • Home grading is mandatory.
  • As with any discipline, with practice comes mastery. The effectiveness of the Kumon Program is dependent on consistent practice. Completion of homework is the responsibility of parents.
  • Communication is key. We ask you communicate with us regularly about any questions, concerns, and observations you have regarding your child's Kumon experience.
  • Kumon is a long-term program that requires extra time, homework and effort from both the Kumon Student and Parent, as well as the Kumon Instructor. We are building independent learners which takes consistency, time, and commitment to the program. The longer your child is in the Kumon Program, the more benefits they reap from it. Helping your child stay accountable to the program will aid in their accomplishments and development.

VACATION DAYS

  • Kumon of Scottsdale-Shea is open year round with very few closure dates throughout the year. Parents will be given notice of all closure dates at least 2 weeks in advance. Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve/Day and New Year's Eve/Day are the main closure days throughout the year.
  • Kumon allows only one month absence per calendar year. If your child is absent for more than one month, they will be marked as Discontinued from the program and you will have to re-register like a new student.
  • If you plan to take a vacation, please let us know at least one week in advance. This will allow us to have work planned and ready for you to pick up on your last class day before leaving on your trip. With Kumon To Go, we can schedule a time to see your student online for their classes while they're gone.
