About the Center

Introduction

Welcome to the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Virginia Beach - Red Mill. For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program, click here.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program, click here.

Policies

PLEASE NOTE: We offer Military Discounts and Dual Subject Enrollment Discounts.

1. There are no make-up classes. If our schedule permits and there is space available, we can accommodate your child at another time on another day.

2. Closures: We are closed for holidays, school breaks (Spring Break and Winter Break), and up to two weeks per year for center closure for vacation and staff training. Center closure dates are listed on the bulletin board (the remainder of 2024 closure dates are listed below).

3. Tuition is set up as a flat monthly rate, which includes the center closure dates. There is no per/session cost.

4. Planned Absences: If you are planning to be absent (vacation/planned absence), please notify Dr. Cortha via email or by using one of the “vacation/planned absence” forms that are located in the binder on the front table in the waiting area. (Unfortunately, when you share with one of my staff that you are planning to be out; they may or may not remember to share that information with me). If you let me know by email or by completing the form in advance, I will respond to determine if you would like homework/a reduction in homework/no homework during the absence.

5. One-Month Absences: Kumon North America’s policy states that a student may only be absent for one month per calendar year without having to re-register to resume study. One-month absences must be taken for a full calendar month. (from the beginning of month to end of same month). A 30-day written notice must be given to Dr. Cortha by utilizing the form located in the binder in the waiting area.

6. Withdrawals: Although, I really hate to see students and families leave us, it is inevitably a part of life. Prior month notification of intended withdrawal is required. Your enrollment period for the subject or subjects will end on the last day of the month following the month in which this notice is submitted to Kumon – Red Mill. For example, if I receive your notification between May 1 - 31, the last day of class would be June 30.

7. Closure Days for remaining of 2024 (No Zoom or In-Center Classes):

· Thursday, July 4 – Friday, July 12 – Vacation
· Monday, September 2 – Labor Day
· Thursday, October 31 - Halloween
