About Your Instructor
Lydia Chan
Originally from Singapore, Lydia Chan is no stranger to the education sector. After graduate school, Lydia served as an employee at the NYC Department of Education. During her time there, she worked on various policy initiatives, including the Special Education Reform, which aimed to integrate students with disabilities into the general education classroom. Her expertise and eagerness to learn propelled her to other roles, first as a Project Manager for the STEM NYC team and later, overseeing compliance in schools under the Legal Implementation Unit.
Lydia is especially passionate about teaching children to read, having gone through the struggles of an emerging reader with her own child. She is trained in the Orton-Gillingham teaching approach, a method based on the science of reading. Using a systemic multi-sensory approach, she provides tailored instruction to meet the specific needs of each child. Her instruction emphasizes the importance of foundational skills like phonics, phonemic awareness, decoding and fluency.
