About the Centre

Introduction

Welcome to Kumon Math and Reading Centre of Oshawa-South. For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program, click here.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program, click here.

Continuous Learning
Kumon is a year-round program, and the centre operates 12 months a year. We encourage our students to attend throughout the year, including the summer, so that students may advance beyond their grade level as soon as possible.

Tuition
A one-time New Student Registration Fee, one-time Materials Fee along with first month's tuition are due upon enrollment. All the fees are payable to Kumon of Oshawa-South. Tuition is not pro-rated for absences.

If a student will be discontinuing Kumon, a notice is required at least one month before the effective date.

Classroom Environment
Food or drink is not allowed into the classroom area. The Kumon classroom has to be a quiet study area so that everyone can concentrate. All telecommunication devices (cellular phones, game consoles, etc.) must be set to silent/vibrate/off mode while in the centre.

To promote your child’s independence at work please stay in the waiting room area.

Class Rules
Upon registration your child will receive a Kumon pouch as well as pencil and eraser. Please ensure that the pouch is looked after and that your child comes to each class with a pencil, eraser and all the work they were assigned (completed or not). Students are expected to attend class ready to work.

Please note that class time is reserved only for students. If your concern can not be addressed in class, please let us know when and where the Instructor can call you to discuss the matter.

Incomplete Homework
Completing homework is necessary to succeed in Kumon. If, for any reason, homework is not completed, please bring any unfinished assignments to class so that the homework can be reassigned.

Parents are encouraged NOT to help their child to complete Kumon assignments. If your child can not complete their work independently, please let the Instructor know. Remember that Kumon's focus is independent learning.

Continuity
Kumon is a year-round program of daily study. Continued advancement is a result of consistent study which also fosters commitment, dedication, and perseverance. For best results, students should expect to remain in the program for several years and should include summer study in their plans. For those students on holiday, the program is portable and homework packages may easily be taken on vacation, with pre-arranging.
