About Your Instructor

Lydia Chan

In addition to running Kumon of Croton-on-Hudson, Lydia Chan is also the Owner and Instructor at Kumon of Beacon, a Center that she started from the ground up in 2019. Lydia and her team weathered the trials of COVID and the remote classroom and have served countless of families since then.

Originally from Singapore, Lydia is no stranger to the education sector. After graduate school, Lydia served as an employee at the NYC Department of Education. During her time there, she worked on various policy initiatives, including the Special Education Reform, which aimed to integrate students with disabilities into the general education classroom. Her expertise and eagerness to learn propelled her to other roles, first as a Project Manager for the STEM NYC team and later, overseeing compliance in schools under the Legal Implementation Unit.

Lydia is especially passionate about teaching children to read, having gone through the struggles of an emerging reader with her own child. She is trained in the Orton-Gillingham teaching approach, a method based on the science of reading. Using a systemic multi-sensory approach, she provides tailored instruction to meet the specific needs of each child. Her instruction emphasizes the importance of foundational skills like phonics, phonemic awareness, decoding and fluency.

The team at Kumon of Croton-on-Hudson are looking forward to welcoming you to the Kumon family!

“Don't give up whenever the work becomes challenging. You just need to keep on trying and you'll get it. I think Kumon has made me smarter in general. I get really into the Reading Program because it uses passages from interesting stories, and I enjoy reading them.”
Harper

“Kumon has helped me to better handle making mistakes. Before I started Kumon, I had a breakdown every time I made a mistake but because Kumon is so challenging, I have learned that it's okay to make mistakes because you can learn from them.”
Calvin

“Kumon has taught me to persevere. There are times when the assignments are hard, but I am determined to work through the challenging assignments. Getting independent practice on my assignments is a great way to prepare me for times in life when I may have to work alone.”
