Students come to the Kumon center twice a week and get work to do at home the days they do not attend the center, including weekends and holidays. They do worksheets for about 30 minutes if they are doing one subject, and for one hour if they are doing two subjects. The idea is for students to be in front of the Kumon material a little bit every day. That is how students become very fast and accurate on their way to mastering the material.
When they come to the center, students check-in to get their homework and their class work. Before beginning to work, students must write their names, date, and beginning and ending time on the worksheets. When they finish their classwork, their work is graded and students must correct their mistakes. During class, students acquire the necessary skills to do their Kumon homework with confidence and ease.
At the center, I observe the students working and later, I evaluate their completed homework and classwork to prepare their future work and modify their lesson plan as needed, thus ensuring that students are working at their just right level. If the students are going to be absent, the parents must advise our center so that their Kumon work can be put outside in a drop-box for pick up.
The effectiveness of the Kumon method depends in great part on the communication between parents, students, and instructor. Therefore, I make use of several tools which set the goals to be achieved and monitor the progress of the students, keeping parents informed of the achievements of their children at each stage.
Kumon is an enrichment program that runs all year round. Kumon students continue to do their worksheets even during summer vacation. Summer is a great time to advance since there is no school. Kumon students are ready to start school well prepared without having to spend time reviewing. Our Kumon students look forward to the challenges of the new school year with complete confidence.
