About Your Instructor
Brian Johnsen
My role as a Kumon Instructor is to bring out the potential in each child. As an extensively trained and certified professional instructor, I serve as a mentor who guides your children through their work while also providing direction, support and encouragement. I work hand-in-hand with parents and guardians, discussing their child's challenges and progress, and the content they are currently studying.
I have a true passion for education and an earnest desire to help children succeed. I create a study plan for each child, I monitor classroom assignments, and I emphasize the importance of accurately completing each assignment within a designated time frame. I want my students to experience a sense of achievement in their daily study. My guidance has helped my students increase self-confidence and become more self-reliant.
After my BS and MS in Nuclear Engineering I moved to Birmingham, worked at Southern Research Institute for 11 years as a Research Engineer prior to going to Vanderbilt University to complete my PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 1990. Then worked for Southern Company Services for four years as an Engineer. With a love for teaching, I worked as a substitute math and science teacher for over 2 years, then taught Physics at The Altamont School for over 4 years. Tutoring students in ACT preparation for a few years helped prepare me for high level Kumon worksheets. Two of my six children attended Kumon of Hoover for over 4 years prior to me taking purchasing Kumon Of Hoover Center as the owner Instructor. I am an avid reader and have taken many advanced university classes. I enjoy helping students find the simple fast ways in math and methods to quickly find answers in reading using Kumon methods. I learn from both teaching the Kumon students and from my mistakes. I teach these lessons to students and parents!
