About Your Instructor
Soo Yeon Kim
My name is Sooyeon Kim, and I am a certified Kumon Instructor with over seven years of experience managing a Kumon Center in Lee’s Summit. My passion for education is rooted in a lifelong love of learning and a deep understanding of human behavior and motivation. I hold a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in French from Sung Shin Women’s University in Seoul, Korea, and earned my Master’s in Social Welfare (MSW) from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2003. I worked as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) until relocating to Kansas in 2010.
As a Kumon Instructor, I strive to understand each child’s unique strengths, challenges, and motivations to create a supportive and engaging learning environment. This individualized approach has helped students transition from IEP programs to mainstream classes and advance up to four years above grade level. I’ve proudly led many students to complete both the math and reading programs, fostering not only academic excellence but also confidence and independence.
Education is a shared passion in my family. My husband is a professor at the University of Central Missouri, and our son, a Kumon completer, now studies Data Science and Economics at the University of Chicago. Our two younger children, currently in elementary school in Overland Park, are also Kumon students. As both an instructor and a long-time Kumon parent, I understand the journey from both perspectives and am committed to supporting each student’s success.
I look forward to partnering with you to help your child reach their full potential in math and reading.
