About Your Instructor
STEVE KHANNA
I earned my Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance, with Honors, from Red McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. I spent two years working as a Financial Analyst for a global corporation, an experience that helped me realize my calling did not lie in the corporate world.
My desire to serve the community grew through volunteering as a Math and Reading tutor for children and working with students at a community service organization for several years. These invaluable experiences inspired me to pursue a career in education.
With that goal in mind, I spent three years teaching English as a Second Language at BEI, one of Houston's top accredited language training institutes. During this time, I discovered my true passion: working directly with children and their families to help build a strong academic foundation and unlock each child's full potential. Wanting to blend my business background with my passion for education, I found the perfect match with Kumon.
I have served as Director of the center since 2012, bringing 14 years of hands-on experience guiding students and families through the Kumon curriculum. I am an extensively trained, certified professional Kumon Instructor who serves as a mentor, walking students through their work while providing direction, support, and encouragement. Through the Kumon Program, children build the desire to achieve more, a genuine love of learning, and the motivation to learn independently, and that is what makes me a proud Kumon Instructor.
My Approach
I see every child as capable of more than they, or even their parents, may realize. Day to day, that means finding each student's "just right" starting point so the work stretches them without overwhelming them, building a study plan around their pace and goals, and staying focused on accuracy and consistency over quick fixes. My focus is always on building a strong foundation first, since that is what allows students to eventually work ahead of their grade level with real confidence rather than just memorized steps. I also make it a priority to stay in close touch with parents, sharing progress, talking through concerns, and celebrating milestones together.
Why I Do This
Leaving the corporate world was the best decision I ever made. It gave me the chance to become the kind of mentor I once looked up to, someone who could walk alongside students as they built confidence one step at a time. More than a decade later, that's still what drives me: helping kids discover they're capable of far more than they thought, and watching that growth carry over into everything else they do. I've now had the privilege of working with thousands of students over these past 14 years, and I still look forward to every new one who walks through our doors.
