I was born in the former USSR, and immigrated to the United States with my parents when I was three years old. Though while growing up, my parents had never heard of Kumon - I had a mathematics tutor who taught me math one year above grade level, so I understand the feeling of Kumon students studying above grade level.
I started working at a local Kumon Center as an Upper Level Math Chief Assistant in March of 2009. I was impressed with the self-study techniques of the students, but most of all I was inspired by how the Instructor motivated his students to progress.
Seeing students who have a thirst for knowledge is always amazing. Even more amazing, however, is being able to see students who are intimidated by either math or reading when they start Kumon, but then evolve to being the top students in their class by strengthening their calculation skills, and learning from examples.
Kumon gives students the opportunity to learn on their own, and gives them independence to not have to rely on teachers for learning. This skill helps prepare them for college and the real world. When we encourage students to study the example at the top of their packets, or re-read a passage, we are giving them the confidence to attack any problems presented to them, both in mathematics, and in life.
My vision is to run our Kumon Center as a place where students of all ages feel empowered to learn both reading and math. Where students feel confident enough to tackle any math or reading problem presented, and learn independently, which is a skill that they can apply throughout the rest of their lives. Once students gain the independence to tackle any problem presented, they are no longer intimidated by any problems life may throw their way, which is a priceless skill.
