About Your Instructor

Michael Chan

Mike Chan, JD/MBA

My name is Mike Chan, Instructor at the Kumon Math and Reading Center of San Mateo – Crystal Springs. It is very fulfilling to help students at all stages and levels – whether they readily achieve Kumon academic levels beyond their current grade level – or are working towards building their academic foundation and confidence.

All my education has coincidentally been from the California Bay Area. I received a JD from Santa Clara University, an MBA from San Jose State University, and a BA, Sociology from UC Berkeley.

As a law student, I was an Instructor for Fresh Lifelines for Youth, Inc. (FLY), a nonprofit organization committed to working with teenage youths who are in the juvenile justice system to inspire them to change the trajectory of their lives and build their skills through legal education, training, and mentoring.

My early experience after graduating was as Director of Administrative Services for San Andreas Regional Center, a community-based nonprofit serving children and adults with developmental disabilities, including autism and cerebral palsy. I’ve also worked in the biopharmaceutical field for large sponsors as well as a couple of startups.

I have a 7 and 9 year old progressing through the Kumon Program as well. Both started before turning 3 years old. It is such a joy to  experience Kumon with my own kids while sharing the Kumon Program with the families in our community. If you are interested in our Kumon Program, please reach out to set up an orientation / assessment.

SUCCESS STORIES

Joshika
Joshika
“Don't give up whenever the work becomes challenging. You just need to keep on trying and you'll get it. I think Kumon has made me smarter in general. I get really into the Reading Program because it uses passages from interesting stories, and I enjoy reading them.”
Harper
Harper
“Kumon has helped me to better handle making mistakes. Before I started Kumon, I had a breakdown every time I made a mistake but because Kumon is so challenging, I have learned that it's okay to make mistakes because you can learn from them.”
Calvin
Calvin
“Kumon has taught me to persevere. There are times when the assignments are hard, but I am determined to work through the challenging assignments. Getting independent practice on my assignments is a great way to prepare me for times in life when I may have to work alone.”

Please contact the Center to inquire about one-time registration fees and tuition rates.

How Does the Assessment Work?

Your free assessment helps us understand your child’s current learning level so we can recommend the best starting point. During the assessment, your child will complete a placement test, and the instructor will review the results with you and explain how the Kumon Program can support your child’s individual learning needs.

There is no obligation to enroll, and you can reschedule your appointment at any time.
