About Your Instructor
MARIA HELENA TRUJILLO
I started my Kumon journey as a mom, desperate to help my younger son reach his full potential despite his learning challenges. The desire to help my child led me to love and lead the Kumon way. I have 11 years of experience as a Kumon instructor, 6 years of experience as a Kumon mom, and 3 years of experience in individualized instruction research at FSU’s Learning Systems Institute and the Florida Center for Reading Research. I hold two master's degrees, one in journalism and one in communications and qualitative research from Purdue University. Most importantly, I have a lifelong passion and independent learning journey on the science of how the brain learns best. I combine my experiences as a Kumon mom, my formal training, and my lifelong passion with my desire to help your kids get the most out of an already proven, effective system – the Kumon method.
I work alongside my very handsome husband, whom I respect and adore (ex-Navy, Physical Oceanographer). We have two incredible sons. One studied neuroscience, linguistics, and cognitive psychology at the University of Chicago. Today, he works with Education Northwest creating research-based solutions that support equality in education. My younger son studies Computer Science at Washington and Lee University, and he is working hard to make the game experiences of the future! As a family we love to travel, camp, and hike together.
I have a great team of assistants, all passionate and trained in the Kumon system and in the commitment of my center, to provide the best personalized Intentional Kumon instruction. Together, we are committed to giving your child what Mr. Toru Kumon intended:
“We must allow children to experience the joy of self-learning and advancing on their own. We hope they will then continue learning by themselves even after going out in the real world, and grow up into people who are proactive in everything they do.” –Toru Kumon.
