About the Center

Introduction

Welcome to our Kumon Math and Reading Center of Bradenton - University Park. For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated, and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program, click here

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program, click here.

Policies

Attendance, Absences and Withdrawal:

  • Students are scheduled to take 30 minutes per subject; however, this time may vary. Please note that if your child is completing his or her work quickly, it is a good thing. You are not paying for time in the Center; you are paying for the learning of academic and life skills! If you find your child is taking a long time and you need to leave, please inform one of the Assistants we will be happy to help you.
  • For unplanned absences please give us as much notice as possible so that we can arrange work pick up from the Center during office hours. You can either call the Center and leave a message or send an e-mail.
  • For vacation, holidays, or any planned absences, please give at least one week notice by filling the Vacation Form and turning it in the office or e-mailing it to us, so that we can prepare assignments for your child’s absence.
  • Please note that students who are absent from Kumon (no work taken or no tuition paid) for more than 1 month in a calendar year, will be considered discontinued. The registration fee of $50 is required for re-enrollment in the program and the student will be re-tested. Students will also lose their Kumon Plus points.
  • For a long-term absence or to discontinue, please give us 30 days’ notice before the first day of your final month, by filling the Absence /Discontinue Form and turning it in at the office or e-mailing it to us.

Class Rules:
In order to provide the maximum learning experience for each student, we have established the following classroom rules:

Students:
  • Do not bring food or drinks to the Center.
  • Walk at all times while in the Center.
  • Use a quiet, classroom voice while in the Center.
  • Personal electronic devices (cellular phones, tablets, etc.) are not allowed in the classroom. Please make sure they are either turned off or set to silent/vibrate mode.
  • Respect other people’s belongings.
  • Clean up after yourself.
  • Be considerate of the right of others to learn.
  • Treat all students, staff, and the Instructor in a respectful manner.
  • Discuss any problems you are having with the Instructor.
  • Remember to try your best at all times.

Parents:
  • Parents are required to stay in the Center for the entire time their child is attending class. Parents are responsible for their children, once students leave the classroom.
  • To promote your child’s independence, please stay in the waiting room area. Parents and siblings are not allowed in the classroom and are requested to talk softly in the waiting area.
  • Please ensure that all electronic devices (cellular phones, tablets, etc.) are set to silent/vibrate mode while in the Center.
  • Due to allergies and sensitivities, no food or drinks are allowed in the Center.
  • Respect that class hours are focused on the student. Communicate any concerns you are having with the Instructor outside of class hours.

Communication:
  • The Instructor schedules follow up meetings with parents at the Center on the first, sixth and twelfth months after a student is enrolled in a program.
  • Student progress graphs will be sent home periodically and results of Achievement Tests will be communicated to the parents.
  • The Instructor will also communicate with the parents if there are any concerns, e.g., absence of the student, significant change in lesson plan, worksheets pickup, missing payment, etc.
  • Please keep us informed about any changes of phone numbers, e-mail addresses or emergency contact information.
  • Planned Center closures will be posted on our e-page , e-mailed to parents and posted in the waiting area. Unplanned closures will also be communicated through e-mail and by posting in the center parent waiting area.

Parents’ Role:
Kumon is a family commitment. Parents are expected to help their child get the most out of their Kumon experience by doing the following:
  • Please create a proper study environment for your child at home. Grade your child’s assignments at home daily and ensure that corrections are done before attempting the next assignment. Start and finish times for each assignment are necessary and will result in repetition, if the times are not recorded. In order to make home grading easier, we provide a brochure giving details on how to home grade along with the answer booklets for each level.
  • Please remember Kumon’s main focus is self-learning. Therefore, parents are encouraged not to help their child complete their assignments. If your child is having difficulty completing his/her assignments independently, please communicate it with the Instructor.
  • Please make class time a priority each week. Students will receive a Kumon pouch or backpack, as well as a pencil and an eraser. Please ensure that the pouch is looked after and your child comes to the Center with a pencil, an eraser and all the worksheets she/he was assigned (completed or not).
  • If you have any questions or concerns about your child's progress, the Kumon method, or any other issue, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail the Center to set up an appointment. Appointments will not be scheduled during class hours as this is reserved for the students.
