About the Center

Introduction

The Kumon of West San Jose was established in 1983 as one of the original Kumon centers in Northern California. Initially offering Kumon Math, it expanded its offerings in subsequent years, introducing the Japanese Kokugo in 1985 and the Reading program in 1991.

In 1999, the center underwent a change in ownership to the Otsuka family, concurrently managing two additional centers. Presently, the Kumon Center of West San Jose continues to flourish under the leadership of Chieko Otsuka, their daughter, who has served as the Head Instructor since 2006. While retired, Mr. and Mrs. Otsuka occasionally grace the center with their presence, attending to the needs of Kumon families and engaging with the students. With a remarkable tenure of over 35 years, the Otsuka family is regarded as one of the pioneers of the Kumon program.

At the core of the Kumon Center of West San Jose is an unwavering commitment to fostering in children a passion for achievement and a self-motivated approach to learning. Whether your child seeks enrichment or requires assistance in catching up, Kumon is designed to ignite a love for learning.

Each student progresses through the program at their own pace, with focus on personalized education that nurtures concentration, motivation, and self-reliance. Continuous monitoring ensures a comprehensive understanding before advancing to new concepts. Equipped with a strong academic foundation, honed critical thinking skills, and proficient problem-solving abilities, your child possesses the potential to realize any desired aspiration.

Toru Kumon:

"Education should be individualized.”

Education must be personalized to accommodate the unique abilities of individuals. Rather than confining students based on their school grade or age, we strive to provide tailored education that aligns perfectly with each student's skill level. This approach allows us to unlock the full potential of every student. By disregarding grade levels, we enable high-achieving students to advance multiple years beyond their peers, while simultaneously supporting less proficient students to bridge the gap and surpass their current grade level.
