COMMITMENT AND WITHDRAWAL POLICY
Commitment Recommendation: We strongly recommend a minimum TWELVE MONTHS of uninterrupted study commitment per subject, and encourage your child to aim for program completion!
Tuition is collected on a monthly basis for the full month. However, most students study at Kumon for two to five years. The Kumon program is designed for long-term study, rather than a “quick-fix” solution. Just like training for a race or practicing an instrument, building a solid educational foundation takes time, and year-round study supports continuous progress. By continuing Kumon studies throughout the year, your child will maintain and build on their successes developing powerful study skills and gaining self-confidence in their abilities. As well, hard-earned study routines will not be broken and can be reinforced even when schools are on break.
*IMPORTANT* We require a minimum of one full calendar month’s written notice from parents who wish to take the maximum one-month break or withdraw from the program (in either or both subjects) or transfer to another Kumon Centre.
For example, if you will be absent for the month of July, you need to notify us by May 31st. Kumon North America permits students to be absent for one month per calendar year after the first full year of study.
Absences longer or more frequent than this will result in the student being discontinued from the program. When a student discontinues, any accumulated Kumon reward points will be lost. Students accepted back into the program will be considered “new” andthe$50 enrollment fee will have to be charged.
We strongly encourage students to take assigned homework with them during holidays and seasonal breaks. Please consult with us regarding your child’s homework planning during any anticipated absences.
For other unplanned absences due to illness or family circumstances, please notify us at your earliest opportunity by phone or email and arrangements for alternate work can be made. We can also make alternate arrangements for homework exchanges with parents or family members.
IN-CLASS EXPECTATIONS AND ETIQUETTE:
Submitting homework: When students submit their completed homework, they should ensure that the homework is in date order with the earliest dated work on top. Students should only use pencil when completing their work and should use an eraser when correcting errors. When making corrections students should erase only the work requiring correction.
Classroom Etiquette:
-
Food, drinks and chewing gum/candy are not allowed in the classroom. Water bottles are acceptable.
-
We ask that students do not wear hats in the classroom.
-
The classroom is a self-study area. Kindly respect other students and remain quiet while in the room.
Independent Learning: The Instructor and Centre Assistants continuously monitor students to identify those students requiring direction. We encourage students struggling with an exercise or topic read over the instructions, follow the examples and attempt to answer the questions independently. If a student is struggling, they may raise their hand as staff are available to provide for hints and tips. To foster independence in our students and to provide a quiet study environment, we ask that parents do not enter the classroom. Please wait in the parent waiting area. If you would like to pass a message to your child, please speak with a Reception staff. We also provide a phone for students to call parents when they are ready to be picked up.
HOMEWORK CHECKING, AND MAKINGWITH HOME CORRECTION:
IMPORTANT: We ask that parents have their child show them the completed Kumon assignments each day. This daily check will keep your child both on track and accountable to you, and will provide you with an important understanding of their progress.
Daily home marking and correction is strongly encouraged so students can receive immediate feedback and immediately correct their homework. Home correction helps the student to avoid “practicing” and accumulating errors for the rest of the week.** Students should not mark their own work!**
Answer books and marking guidelines are available on loan from the Centre. Please ask us if you have any questions regarding the marking process. We only lend out answer books to those participating in home marking. Regardless of home marking, we ask all parents to check over their child’s completed work to ensure that the assignment has been timed, fully completed and ensure that the work sheets are in order.
PARENT COMMUNICATION:
Parent-Instructor-Student communication is critical for your child’s success in the Kumon Program. You will receive an email after your child has successfully completed an Achievement Test at the end of each level with information on how your child is progressing in their Kumon studies. You may also receive other communications via email from the Centre keeping you informed with regards to your child’s progress and Centre activities.
Please let Centre staff know how your child is finding their Kumon studies at home. If they are struggling or you have concerns, you’re welcome to book an appointment to speak with Benny. Your child’s continued success with their Kumon studies will keep them motivated, making it important to deal with any small issues immediately.
During class, we keep our focus on the students. Please speak with a Centre Assistant if you have an immediate concern. If you would like to speak with the Instructor, we ask that you book an appointment. Please feel free to phone during non-class hours or send an email. We strive to respond to parent emails and voicemails within one business day.
