About the Centre

Introduction

Welcome to our Kumon Math and Reading Centre. For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program.

Commitment

Kumon is a long term program. We require a minimum of a one-year commitment in the Kumon program.

Class expectations and Parent Waiting Area

  • Food or drinks are not allowed in the classroom or parent waiting area, with the exception of bottled water.
  • The classroom is a self-study area. Please respect other students and maintain a quiet area. Please use your cell phone outside of the classroom.
  • If students are experiencing difficulty in completing the assignments, we encourage them to read over the instructions, follow the examples, and attempt to answer the questions independently. If they require assistance, the Instructor and Centre Assistants are available for hints and tips.
  • To foster independence in our students and to provide a quiet study environment, we ask that parents wait in the back of the classroom or outside of the classroom.
  • While you are waiting for your child to finish his/her classwork, please be courteous and keep your voices down while waiting in the parent waiting area.
  • Please pick up your child promptly. For our students' safety, we do not want our students to wait alone under any circumstances.
  • The parent or guardian shall be liable for any damages and injuries caused by their children to other persons, the Kumon Centre, or the premises in which the centre is located. The Instructor is not liable for any Kumon student outside of the centre facility or after the student leaves the centre.

Home Marking

Home marking takes approximately five (5) minutes each day, yet the benefits are long-term. It provides students with immediate feedback. Students can learn from their errors right away and not repeat them on future assignments. Home marking also helps parents become aware of their child's strengths and weaknesses. Answer books and marking guidelines are available from the Instructor.

Parent Communication

Communication is an important element of your child's learning journey. We provide constructive feedback during class to our students. We try our best to reserve our class hours working and observing our students. If you have comments or questions regarding your child's work, please do not hesitate to contact us via phone call, or email outside of class hours.

Late, Absences and Vacation

Students are asked to arrive at the centre ready to complete their work at their scheduled time. We will do our best to accommodate families who cannot make it to class at their scheduled time. Schedules can be changed at any time provided that an available time slot is available. Advance notice is required for students who require an alternate time slot and same day requests may not be accommodated.

Students who arrive 15 minutes after their scheduled time slot may not be able to complete their entire assignment at the centre and may be asked to pick up work for that day.

Students and parents may pick up work during class hours if for some reason you cannot stay for class. Students and parents who are picking up worksheets must drop off their completed worksheets. For longer periods of absence, please try your best to notify us at least two (2) weeks prior so we can have sufficient time to plan and prepare work for your child to do during the absences. Same-day requests will not be accommodated.
