Commitment
Kumon study is a long-term program rather than a "quick-fix" solution. There is no doubt that year-round study brings continuous progress. Just like training for a race or practicing an instrument, building a solid educational foundation takes time. By continuing their Kumon studies throughout the year, students will gain confidence and come to expect success. Hence, we require a minimum of a one-year commitment to the Kumon Program.
Class expectations and Parent Waiting Area
- Food or drinks are not allowed in the classroom or parent waiting area, with the exception of bottled water.
- The classroom is a self-study area. Please respect other students and maintain a quiet environment. Please use your cell phone outside the classroom.
- If students are experiencing difficulties in completing the assignments, we encourage them to read over the instructions, follow the examples, and attempt to answer the questions independently. If they require assistance, the instructor and centre assistants are available for hints and tips.
- To foster independence in our students and to provide a quiet study environment, we ask that parents wait in the back of the classroom or outside the classroom.
- While you are waiting for your child to finish his or her classwork, please be courteous and keep your voices down while waiting in the parent waiting area.
- Please pick up your child promptly. For our students' safety, we do not want our students to wait alone under any circumstances.
- The parent or guardian shall be liable for any damages and injuries caused by their children to other people, the Kumon Centre, or the premises in which the centre is located. The Instructor is not liable for any Kumon student outside of the centre facility or after the student leaves the centre.
Home Marking
Home marking takes approximately five (5) minutes each day. However, the benefits are long-term. It provides students with immediate feedback, allowing them to learn from their mistakes right away and avoid repeating them in future assignments. Home marking also helps parents become aware of their child's strengths and weaknesses. Answer books and marking guidelines are available from the instructor.
Parent Communication
Communication is an important element of your child's learning journey. We provide constructive feedback during class to our students. We try our best to reserve our class hours working and observing our students. If you have comments or questions regarding your child's work, please do not hesitate to contact us via phone call, or email outside of class hours.
Late, Absences, and Vacation
Students are asked to arrive at the centre ready to complete their work at their scheduled time. We will do our best to accommodate families who cannot make it to class at their scheduled time. Schedules can be changed at any time provided that an available time slot is available. Advance notice is required for students who require an alternate time slot, and same-day requests may not be accommodated.
Students who arrive 15 minutes after their scheduled time slot may not be able to complete their entire assignment at the centre and may be asked to pick up work for that day. Students and parents may pick up work during class hours if, for some reason, students cannot stay for the class.
Students and parents who are picking up worksheets must drop off their completed worksheets. For longer periods of absence, please do your best to notify us at least two (2) weeks in advance so that we have enough time to plan and prepare work for your child to do during the absences. Same-day requests cannot be accommodated.
Please note that Kumon North America permits students to be absent for a maximum of one month per calendar year, if necessary. Absences longer or more than one month will result in the student being discontinued from the program.
Fee structure
The first month’s payment can be made by e-transfer, cheque (payable to “Oakridge Learning Centre”), or cash. We only accept Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) for subsequent months. We process our tuition on the first business day of every month. We will charge a $50 fee for Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF). A yearly, monthly tuition fee increase of $5 will occur in October of each year.
Forms to complete
The following forms must be completed and returned with the student on their first day of class:
- eEnrollment Form (Online)
- Notice to Parents/Privacy Consent Form (Online)
- Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) Form
- VOID cheque or Direct deposit form
- First-month payment
- Students enrolled in the Reading Program are encouraged to refer to the Recommended Reading list and check out books.
Withdrawal Policy
Tuition is charged for the Kumon Method and the use of the worksheets. Tuition is not prorated if you discontinue the program at any time during the month. The full month's tuition remains due.
We require a one-month notice prior to the 1st day of the month of withdrawal from the Kumon program or transfer to another Kumon centre. Please contact your Kumon Instructor should you wish to withdraw from the Kumon program to obtain a notice of withdrawal form.
Failure to give a written notice absence or termination will result in a full one-month charge of the tuition fee.
