About the Center

Introduction

Welcome to the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Irvine-Northwood. We are conveniently located in the Northwood Town Center Shopping Plaza on the corner of Yale Ave and Irvine Blvd.  For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program.

Policies

Enrollment Period:
The minimum enrollment period is six months. For the child to achieve above-grade competence, the recommended duration is one year.

Tuition:
Tuition is due the 25th day prior to the beginning of the first day of the enrolled month. There will be an automatic $15 late fee added to all late payments. Worksheets will also be withheld until past due payments are made. Please pay on time to avoid any late fees or disruption in service.

Insufficient Fund Fees:
Parents will automatically be assessed a $35 bank fee for bounced checks or insufficient funds via EFT.

Communications:
Class time is reserved for instruction and observation. During class, please direct all questions to the receptionist and/or fill out a communication form. You can also call and leave a message, email the instructor, or schedule a conference with the instructor. class time is the only time the instructor gets to observe and assist the students with their lessons. Please be respectful of the students' time with the instructor.

Student responsibilities:
Strive for a positive attitude, regular attendance and daily completion of homework.

  • Be respectful of the class environment.
  • Repeat and correct to 100 percent for rock-solid mastery!
  • Record your times.
  • Bring your own pencil and eraser to class.
  • Communicate with your instructor.
  • Do not leave the center without your parent.

Parental involvement:
Your support is vital to the success of your child. Please help your child develop a regular study routine at home in an area free of distractions.
Students master concepts by doing the work themselves. Please do not allow the use of calculators, multiplication charts, or other aids at home.
Finally, stay positive and do your best to encourage your child. We want our students to be challenged and motivated, not stressed. If your child is having difficulty with the homework, please contact the Center Instructor.

Unexpected absence:
Class attendance is a vital part of the Kumon Program. If, however, your student is unable to attend class, please call or email the center by 11 a.m. on the day of class so we can prepare the work to be picked up. This notice of cancellation will also allow us time to make adjustments to future lesson plans.

Planned Absence:
Please call or email the instructor one week in advance of the pick-up date when you need extended homework to cover an absence from the center. Use the Advance Notice of Absences form and submit it a week before the pickup date. Students almost invariably lose momentum and regress with periods of a week or more of not doing daily practice. It is advisable to take work with you on vacations and have them do it daily.

Kumon allows one-month absence per the calendar year before the student is dropped from their automated computer system. Absence over one month in a calendar year requires re-enrollment including re-registration, material/library fees plus possible placement testing.

Home-grading:
Home-grading allows students to receive immediate feedback on their work and make any corrections early in the process before mistakes become problematic and hinder progress. Home-grading is required by parents in order to allow students to achieve the maximum benefit from the Kumon program. Please see the Center Instructor for home-grading instructions.

Holidays:
When a holiday falls on a class day, we prepare homework to be done by the student over the break. We do not provide makeup classes to compensate for the missed class.

No rescheduling of classes:
Sorry but no rescheduling of classes unless a one-week notice is given.

Cancellation Policy:
Thirty (30) days advance written notice from the 1st of the effective termination month is necessary to stop Kumon enrollment in the next month. Failure to give adequate notice to cancel enrollment will result in the enrollment for the following month and termination occurring the next month after that. Please fill-out the One Calendar Month (30 Days) Advance Notice of EFT/Enrollment Changes form and submit your notice on time. Paid tuition is non-refundable.
