Kumon Math and Reading Center of Kendall - North
(786) 607-0400
Welcome to Kumon Math and Reading Center of Kendall – North! We are happy you have decided to join us! The following are some guidelines and answers to frequently-asked questions that will help us work together to provide the best learning experience for your child.
Attendance
Class attendance is a vital part of the Kumon Program. If, however, your student is unable to attend class, please call or email the center by 11 a.m. on the day of the class so we can prepare the work to be picked up. This will also allow us time to make adjustments to future lesson plans.
On class days, students must stay in the center to wait for a parent to pick them up. We are not responsible for students once they leave the center.
Class time: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 2:00 – 7:00
Students must attend class at their appointment time. Parents/siblings/caregivers may wait in the waiting area, but are not allowed in the classroom. Students need a quiet environment in which to work, and the instructor must be focused on the students during class time.
Communication
Communication between parents and instructor is encouraged, but must take place outside of class time. Parent conferences are held on a regular basis to review progress, and you may request an additional meeting at any time. Emails will be sent periodically to inform you of any events or announcements.
Please feel free to let an assistant know if you need to speak with the Center Instructor, and the message will be relayed for follow-up after class. You may also contact her at (786) 607-0400 or [email protected] at any time other than class time.
Workload
The instructor determines the amount of work assigned to each student; however, student and parental feedback help this process. The goal is to assign an amount of homework that can be completed comfortably on a daily basis.
Please call the center 24 hours prior to class to discuss any adjustments or concerns regarding your child’s Kumon study plan. A good rule of thumb when requesting adjustments is: parents can ask for less; students can ask for more.
Student responsibilities
Strive for a positive attitude, regular attendance and daily completion of homework.
• Be respectful of the class environment.
• Repeat and correct to 100 percent for rock-solid mastery!
• Record your times.
• Bring your own pencil and eraser to class.
• Communicate with your instructor.
• Do not leave the center without your parent.
Parental involvement
• Your support is vital to the success of your child. Please help your child develop a regular study routine at home in an area free of distractions.
• Students master concepts by doing the work themselves. Please do not allow the use of calculators, multiplication charts, or other aids at home.
• Finally, stay positive and do your best to encourage your child. We want our students to be challenged and motivated, not stressed. If your child is having difficulty with the homework, please contact the Center Instructor.
Blue Kumon Homework Pouch
The Kumon pouch travels between home and center. At your child's class sessions, s/he will receive work until the next class day. During every class sessions, s/he should come to the center with the Kumon Pouch in hand. The completed homework will be collected for evaluation. Work is dated for specific days and should be done on the day it's assigned. Pencils, erasers and a sharpener should also be kept in the pouch as a way for your child to learn about responsibility and the value of being prepared.
Home grading
Home grading allows students to receive immediate feedback on their work and make any corrections early in the process before mistakes become problematic and hinder progress. Home grading is optional, but is strongly encouraged during extended times away from the center.
If you would like to grade your child’s work on a regular basis or are planning for an extended vacation, please see the Center Instructor for home grading instructions.
Weekly Worksheet Assignments
Kumon of Kendall – North students are responsible for completing Kumon worksheets seven days a week. Most students attend twice a week, while others may only attend once a week. On your child's class day(s), s/he will take home worksheets packets to complete at home until the next class day. Tuesday/Friday students will complete Tuesday's and Friday's packet at the center and take home Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday packets. Your child may be assigned corrections or missed assignments to be done on Sundays. If neither is assigned, s/he will be assigned a regular homework assignment. On center days, there is no work to be done at home since they will be doing class work, taking an Achievement Test, or doing supplemental activities in class.
Your child must return to the center with the blue Kumon homework pouch containing: 1) all previously completed/graded/corrected homework, and 2) any incomplete homework packets, which allow us to make any necessary adjustments to future work. Worksheets should be organized at home before returning to the center. Please help your child arrange homework by subject and date order. This will go a long way in helping your child take ownership of his/her own Kumon experience.
Students complete one assignment per day in the order in which they are assigned, to maintain the integrity of the lesson plan. Please remind/assist your child to write name, start time, and end time on the first page of each homework packet. (There is no need to time each page; we look for the total time taken to complete the packet). Students earn one Kumon dollar for each homework packet that meets these criteria.
Timing Homework
Your child's math and reading homework assignments must include name, start time and end time. This helps us plan appropriate work and an appropriate workload for your child. (If your child is too young to write name and times on his/her own, please note it for him/her).
Only homework packets with name and times are rewarded with Kumon dollars. All worksheets (Math 3A & Reading 2A and above) have a "standard completion time" (SCT) goal. Without completion times, student work cannot be properly evaluated and may therefore need to be reassigned.
Study Room Area
In order to maintain an atmosphere conducive to study, we request that only students enter the study room. Brothers, sisters, and parents are asked to stay in the waiting area. Students should leave their iPods or any electronic devices in the waiting room or in their backpacks.
Center Waiting Area
In an effort to guarantee each child's safety, we ask that Kumon parents/guardians remain onsite to assure their children's arrivals and departures. Parents and guardians are encouraged to wait in the waiting area.
Kumon Recommended Reading Library (RRL) Books
Reading students in Early Learner Levels 7A~3A are assigned books during center visits. Some of the books are meant to be read aloud by an adult to model fluency and instill a love for reading, while others are for children to "read" on their own. We are limited to checking out one book per student.
Kumon Incentive Program
Since Kumon is "extra work," we reward students with Kumon Dollars. Students earn one Kumon Dollar for each completed homework assignment returned with name, start time and end time (must be home-graded and corrected, when applicable). Students are given a reward once they have collected 100 Kumon Dollars. Prizes include Kumon gear, simple toys and gift certificates to local businesses or restaurants.
Absences/Vacations
Kumon is a year-round program and worksheets are assigned daily. If you are scheduling a vacation, please give one week advance notice in writing so that we can prepare work for your student to take (we suggest continuing Kumon work during vacation) or adjust their lesson plans if they are not taking work.
Kumon North America allows students one continuous month off each year without being disenrolled. After a one-month absence, students must re-enroll with a placement test and enrollment fee.
Holidays
The Center operates year-round, but we follow the public school calendar and are closed on most major holidays. Closures are posted on the center website.
Withdrawal
A thirty day (30 days) written notice is required to withdraw from the program in order to allow time to stop automatic payments (the 5th day of the preceding month). Failure to receive such notice will result in continued charges to your account. Your account will remain open and active until written notice is received.
Paid tuition is non-refundable and is forfeited should a student discontinue enrollment. In cases of medical or other emergencies where notice by the 5th day of the preceding month is impossible to give, please call us and we will do what we can to accommodate your situation.
Liability
Kumon Centers are not day-care centers. They cannot provide child care services. Parents and guardians are advised that each child's study session varies in length according to the time it takes to complete the day's assignments. If, in the parent's or guardian's determination, a child is not old enough to go to and from the Center on his/her own, the parent/guardian shall be liable for any damages and injuries caused by the child to other persons and the parent agrees to hold harmless, defend and indemnify Kumon North America, Inc. and its Instructors. The Instructor is not liable for any Kumon student outside the Center facility before the student arrives at the Center or after the student leaves the Center.
We welcome your feedback. Never hesitate to ask questions, share concerns, or generally let me know how everything is going.
