About the Centre

Introduction

Welcome to our Kumon Math and Reading Centre of North Cambridge!

For more than 60 years, Kumon's after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated, and self-reliant. We monitor each child's progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The
Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program, click here.

The
Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program, click here.

Kumon is much more than a tutoring program. Daily completion of Kumon Math and Reading worksheets is also, in reality, calisthenics of the brain. It develops striking new patterns of neural communication between brain regions involved in numerical thinking and those involved in working memory.

Furthermore, research has also shown that the earlier in life students start this process, the more successful they will be.
Children as young as three years of age enrolled in pre-kindergarten programs have improved cognitive skills and kindergarten readiness traits, which are strongly associated with their later achievement. At just three years old, a child's brain is about 80% the size of an adult brain and will be developing at a faster rate than at any other time of their life.

In recognition of this, our
Kumon's Early Learner Program gives children a head start in developing valuable study habits required in school - such as fine motor skills and organization and time management - which will prepare them for kindergarten and enable them to enjoy success in school.

Our North Cambridge Kumon Centre dedicates two classes a week, Mondays and Thursdays (4-6:30 pm), solely to our Early Learner (EL) students. We concentrate our efforts toward developing their familiarity with our programs and the skills they will need to progress to our regular twice-weekly classes on Tuesdays and Fridays (4-7:30pm).

In addition to completing our regular worksheets in class, our EL students also utilize numerous other supplemental tools to help develop and enhance their skills. Each Early Learner receives an EL Graduation certificate when they are ready to progress to our Tuesday and Friday classes. We also have classes on Saturday mornings from 10-Noon for students who aren't able to attend our Friday class for some reason or other. Also, because of the Covid epidemic, virtual classes are available. Please contact the centre for further details.

The Centre Director also has office hours outside of regular class hours and is at the centre seven days a week for current parent appointments to discuss the progress of their students and for prospective families to have an orientation to the program and student assessments for their child/children. Please call 519-223-5153 to schedule such an appointment outside of regular class hours. We look forward to hearing from you.

Price and Fees

Tuition fees are $130 per month for each program, so if a student is enrolled in both Math and Reading the total cost would be $260 each month. There is also a one-time $50 registration fee. There is no charge for the Orientation and Student Assessment.

Policies

It is strongly recommended students attend classes twice per week as per the following schedule:

Early Learner student classes - Mondays and Thursdays (4-6:30pm).

Regular student classes - Tuesdays and Fridays (4:30-7:30pm)

If a student can't attend on the Friday, we also have a class on Saturday morning from 10am-12pm, so they don't get behind in their work.

Students may arrive at any time following opening time. Please remember to allow for enough time to complete their work, have it marked and do any necessary corrections before closing time. The length of time a student will need to be at the centre during each class can be discussed with the Instructor. When students leave the centre they will take home worksheets to be completed, one set per day, at home until their next class day. Work done at home should be carefully timed and marked by the parent (answer books and marking instructions are provided). Any corrections should be done immediately. All completed homework should be returned to the centre on the next class day to be recorded.

If a student is not able to attend class twice each week, as long as we know ahead of time, arrangements can be made for a full week of work to be given when they leave class. These, and other such aspects, can be discussed during the parent/student orientation to our centre programs. We try to be as flexible as possible to accommodate family schedules. Should you be going on vacation at any time during the year, we can prepare work ahead of time to take with you.
