About the Centre

Introduction

Welcome to our Kumon Math and Reading Centre. For more than 50 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program, click here.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program, click here.

Tuition is charged for the Kumon Method and the use of the worksheets. The number of worksheets assigned or classes attended do not affect the tuition.

Student's Schedule:

Students are encouraged to attend the centre twice per week at their scheduled time. If attending twice per week is challenging, please speak to the instructor about attending once per week.

Please note that if your child is completing his or her work quickly, it is a good thing indicating that he/she/they are ready to take on more work. Note that you are not paying for time in the Centre; you are paying for the learning of academic and life skills!

Students are scheduled to attend class at a specifically chosen time. This system allows us to know how many students to expect at any given time and therefore schedule Assistants to best support our students. It also ensures that a seat is available for your child at your scheduled time.

You will be shown the currently available time slots at the time of registration.

Please arrive within 10 minutes of your scheduled time. If you do not arrive on time, you may be asked to pick up work for the day (especially for early learners).

Students are encouraged to complete work every day of the week, including weekends and holidays, in order to make smooth progress, and build good work habits.

Continuous Learning:

Kumon is a year round program and the Centre operates 12 months a year. We encourage our students to attend throughout the year, including the summer, so that students may advance beyond their grade level as soon as possible.

Kumon is not a “quick fix” program; therefore a long term personal commitment is required.

Class Rules:

In order to provide the maximum learning experience for each student, we have established the following classroom rules:

For Students:

The Centre is a place of study and therefore requires a quiet atmosphere.

Students are expected to behave in a respectful manner at the Kumon Centre. This includes using good manners, a quiet voice and not being disruptive. Students who are disruptive to the learning environment may be asked to leave the class.

Due to allergies and sensitivities, no food or drinks are allowed in the centre or the parent waiting area.

Walk at all times while in the Centre. No running allowed.

Personal electronic devices (cellular phones, tablets, etc.) are not allowed in the classroom. Please make sure they are either turned off or set to silent/vibrate mode.

 Clean up after yourself.

Discuss any problems you are having with the Instructor.

Remember to try your best at all times.

For Parents:

To promote your child’s independence, please stay in the waiting room area. Parents and siblings are not allowed in the classroom and are requested to talk softly in the waiting area.

Please ensure that all electronic devices (cellular phones, tablets, etc.) are set to silent/vibrate mode while in the Centre.

Please respect that class hours are focused on the student. Communicate any concerns you are having with the Instructor outside of class hours.

Communication:

Your child's progress is always our highest priority. We will send home student progress information after every achievement test, along with the achievement test results. Information of this type is sent through your child, so please check their blue Kumon case for communications to you. The Instructor schedules follow up meetings with parents at the Centre on the first, sixth and twelfth months after a student is enrolled in a program. If you would like to meet and discuss how your child is progressing, please let us know. Parent meetings are done by appointment outside of regular class hours. Please do not hesitate to call or e-mail us if you need guidance related to Kumon or if you would like to share information on what you are observing at home.

The Instructor will also communicate with the parents if there are any concerns, e.g., absence of the student, incomplete assigned work, significant change in lesson plan, worksheets pickup, missing payment, etc.

Please keep us informed about any changes of phone numbers, e-mail addresses or emergency contact information.

Planned Centre closures will be e-mailed and posted in the waiting area. Unplanned closures will also be communicated through e-mail.

Parents’ Role:

Kumon is a family commitment. Please check that your child has completed their home work daily.

Parents are encouraged to help their child get the most out of the Kumon experience by grading homework and ensuring that corrections are done before the next assignment is attempted. We can provide an Answer Book to facilitate the process. Grading is a 2-5 minutes exercise, which demonstrates to your child that YOU are committed to Kumon and it has an immeasurable impact on your child’s progress and dedication.

Please remember Kumon’s main focus is self-learning. Therefore, parents are encouraged not to help their child complete their assignments. If your child is having difficulty completing his/her assignments independently, please communicate with the Instructor.

Please make class time a priority each week. Students will receive a Kumon pouch or backpack, as well as a pencil and an eraser. Please ensure that the pouch is looked after and your child comes to the Centre with a pencil, an eraser and all the worksheets she/he was assigned (completed or not).

Tax Deductibility:

A receipt for the total amount paid towards your child’s tuition fees for any calendar year may be obtained by request (starting Nov 1st, 2017) and can be claimed under Children Recreational Activity Credit.

Kumon Loyalty Program:

Kumon Plus is a loyalty program run by Kumon in which students receive points for each month they are enrolled in Kumon. These points encourage students to commit to long-term study at Kumon. They can be used towards earning games, fun trips and much more. To register your children in the program please visit www.kumonplus.com for more information.
