About the Centre

Introduction

Welcome to our Kumon Math and Reading Centre of Scarborough - Malvern! For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program, click here.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program, click here.

Policies for Kumon Malvern:
If a student will be absent from Kumon (no work taken), either temporarily or indefinitely, a written notice is required a minimum of 15 days before the effective date. Failure to give such written notice will result in a full charge of class fees for the following month.

*Students who are absent from Kumon (no work was taken and no tuition paid) for more than one month in a given calendar year will be considered “Discontinued”. Discontinued students forfeit any accrued “Kumon Plus” points and will be required to pay the Registration Fee again upon re-enrollment.

WHEN A STUDENT IS UNABLE TO ATTEND A CLASS:

If you let us know one class in advance, we will provide work for the absent period.  Please call the number above or send an email to [email protected] to make arrangements.

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR CLASS:

Students should always come prepared with sharpened pencils and erasers as well as their completed homework.

INCOMPLETE HOMEWORK:

Completing homework daily is necessary to succeed in Kumon.  If, for any reason, homework is not completed, please bring back any unfinished assignments to class, so that it can be re-assigned.

PARENT’S ROLE IN KUMON:

Parental support at home is very important in the Kumon Method. Same as in sports or music education, it is essential to continue the worksheet study everyday. Please encourage your child to complete their work daily. For example, setting Kumon Time for doing Kumon homework every day before dinner will become a daily routine for the child, thus allowing the child to progress smoothly through the program.

Home-marking is an option so that corrections can be made immediately at home. Answer books are available ON LOAN ($4 deposit). Please make sure the answer book is returned in good condition upon completion of the level.

COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN INSTRUCTOR AND PARENTS:

We will periodically send home progress graphs with students, and following every Achievement Test, we will communicate the result to students and parents.  Most information of this type is sent to you through your child, so please check his/her Kumon bag for communications to you.  If you ever have any questions at all, please call us at any time or let us know during class that you need to talk, and we will set up a mutually convenient time after class hours.

THE CLASSROOM IS A PLACE FOR LEARNING:

No food or drink (including water) is allowed, and students are asked not to disrupt the class by talking loudly or excessively. To develop independent learning skills as well as to provide a quiet learning environment for your children, I must insist parents and siblings wait outside of the classroom while class is in session. Please drop off your children at the door and return to pick up your children in approximately 30 minutes for one subject or in an hour for dual subjects. We are not responsible to look after your children after they finish their work at the Centre.
