About the Centre

Introduction

Welcome to our centre:

My name is Joyce Coffey and I am the instructor at Sherwood Park Kumon - Central location.  We are located just to the south of Sherwood Park Mall and to the east of the Strathcona Library, in the Park Centre and Hotel.  We are downstairs and the best access is to park on the south side of the building and come down the stairs on either side of the lounge patio.

We are open for both in-person and virtual learning and I very much look forward to meeting you.

Tutoring prepares for tests. Kumon prepares for life.

Kumon’s time-tested method allows us to tailor lesson plans to the unique needs of our students, which fosters independent learning and an innate desire in our students to achieve more on their own.

Our methodology for learning transforms the lives of our students. It’s a transformation that children will carry with them beyond the classroom. Our focus is not simply on getting a better grade on the next exam: it’s the most important lesson of all, the value of independent learning.

The Kumon Method

Independent Learning — The Kumon Curriculum is divided into levels, each one building upon the last. This method, coupled with the instructor’s strategic lesson plan, will enable your child to learn on his or her own while fostering creative thinking and analytical skills.

Success from the Start — We ensure that your child begins the Kumon Curriculum at a “comfortable starting point”—a carefully determined level based on an assessment of his or her abilities. This starting point may be at a level below your child’s current grade in school. In the Kumon Method, each child begins at a point in the curriculum that is most beneficial to his or her development, so he or she can develop strong study skills, build confidence, and establish a routine with Kumon.

Advancing at the “Just Right” Level — At Kumon, your child will always study at the “just right” level—one matched to his or her abilities. This allows your child to gain a solid comprehension of each new concept before moving ahead. Your child’s “just-right” level of learning is not determined by age or grade, but by his or her ability.

Comprehending Each Concept —At the center, your child will work through his or her assignment until each problem is understood. Assignments are timed and graded, and students will set goals to ensure comprehension of each new concept introduced. As your child progresses, he or she will work to complete the assignment within a recommended time period to help your child develop a strong and truly comprehensive understanding of each concept.

Practice Makes Perfect — Kumon’s daily assignments nurture a strong work ethic, concentration skills, and critical thinking skills. The consistent practice through short daily assignments helps to nurture an innate understanding of the math and reading material being learned and helps students build focus and discipline.

Maximizing Potential — Our instructors will guide your child to perform at his or her highest potential, surpassing expectations of what is possible by creating individualized lesson plans for your child.

6. Student Class Schedule:

For student scheduling purposes, we allow 35 minutes per subject. We wish to maintain a good student-to-staff ratio, so please ensure that your child comes at the irregular class time. If you need to change their class time, kindly give us at least one week’s notice, and we will let you know what other appointment times are available. If you are unable to bring your child at the designated time, please let us know as soon as possible. We can have them come at a different time, OR you can arrange to just pick up their homework.

7. In-Class Expectations:
Only water bottles are allowed in the classroom. No food, gum, or other drinks are allowed during class hours. The classroom is a self-study area; please respect other students and remain quiet. Please use your cell phones outside of the classroom. If you are late, we can admit you, but the end time remains the same since we need time in between students to disinfect the classroom. Those who are in two subjects can remain in the classroom during the cleaning time. We can not guarantee how clean and disinfected the washrooms are, so please restrict washroom use while at the centre. MASKS MUST BE WORN. THOSE WITHOUT ONE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND CLASS THAT DAY.

If students are having trouble completing the assignments, we encourage them to read over the instructions, follow the examples, and attempt to answer the questions independently. If they require assistance, the Instructor is available for hints and tips. To foster independence in our students and to provide a quiet study environment, we ask that parents do not enter the classroom. The waiting room is closed, so parents will have to wait in the hall or come back in 35 minutes to pick up their children. We ask that those with children who are 6 or under wait in the building. We can not watch the children as they wait for their parents, so please be prompt or let us know if they can leave without you being in the hallway to pick them up.

8. Zoom Class Expectations:
Classes will be 35 minutes long per subject at most. Please ensure that your child is prepared for their online class. They must be in a quiet location and have their pencil, eraser, and Kumon ready to go before they log in. Children are not permitted to eat during their Zoom class. Please remember to log in at your scheduled time, as we will not be sending text or email reminders. If you are late, we can admit you, but the end time remains the same. Please ensure that your child’s Kumon work is visible on camera.

9. Home Marking and Correction:
Home marking and correction of materials done at home are expected to be completed daily. Doing so avoids the students “practicing their errors” for the rest of the week, as well as the accumulation of corrections to address later. As a parent, you will become much more aware of your child’s developing skills. We will show you how to mark and do corrections at home.

10. Absences, Vacations and Withdrawal from the program:
Kumon study is a long-term program rather than a “quick-fix” solution. There is no question that year-round study brings continuous progress. By continuing their Kumon study throughout the year, students will gain confidence, anticipate success, and will not break hard-earned study routines.

We encourage students to take assigned homework with them during holidays and seasonal breaks. Please ask for a vacation form if you will be absent for your typical pick-up day. The more notice that you give us, the better we can plan for smooth study while you are away. I plan for new concepts to be done in class and if there is little notice, the new concept may be done while the student is away from the class, resulting in frustration for everyone. For other unplanned absences due to illness or family circumstances, we kindly ask that you notify us at your earliest convenience. Please contact the centre if you need to pick up or drop off work other than class times.

Kindly note that Kumon North America permits students to be absent one month (without paying for work being sent along) per calendar year. Absences are longer or more frequent than this results in the student being discontinued from the program. The student will need to register and pay the registration fee to begin anew.

IMPORTANT: WE REQUIRE A MINIMUM OF ONE FULL CALENDAR MONTH'S WRITTEN NOTICE FROM PARENTS WHO WISH TO TAKE THE MAXIMUM ONE MONTH BREAK OR TO WITHDRAW FROM THE PROGRAM. (FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU WISH TO WITHDRAW YOUR CHILD FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST, YOU WILL NEED TO NOTIFY ME IN WRITING BY JUNE 30TH).

11. Communication:
Parent-Instructor-Studentcommunication is critical to the success of the student’s learning. Some of the channels of communication include achievement test results (sent home with the student), notes written on the homework organizer, phone (780 570 5280 ext.#2), email ([email protected]), or pre-arranged consultations with the instructor. During class, we keep our focus on the classwork, so kindly keep any communications as brief as possible or contact us during non-centre hours. Since much of our regular communication with parents is through text, we ask that parents ensure that we have their current cell numbers so that they are up to date on the happenings at our centre.

12. Awards and Recognition:
The Kumon North American StudentAward Program recognizes the achievements of the many advanced students who, through their hard work and perseverance, are studying work in Kumon which is beyond their school grade level. Some of the award categories include:

  • Kumon International Standards of Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum
  • Program Completer Awards – Level “O” for Math and Level “L” for Reading
  • J by 6 – reach high school materials before the end of grade six
  • Other special recognitions

Students also accrue Kumon points for continuous study at www.kumonplus.com. Students are additionally awarded Kumon dollars for their daily work completion done to Kumon standards. We have a “Coffey Shop” which is open four times a year where students can spend their well-earned Kumon dollars to shop in our parent-free zone.
