About the Center

Introduction

Welcome to the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Southbury!

After having a location at Southford Road for 10 years, we relocated to Bennett Square at 134 Main St S in Sept 2021. We are conveniently located just off Exit 15 of I-84, towards the rear of the plaza with Leo's Diner (next to Piper and Dune and Pet Aesthetics). The plaza is accessible from Main St S (next to Planet Fitness) and also Poverty Road.

Kumon of Southbury has been in operation since November 2011, and in this span, has catered to the academic needs of hundreds of students. Our Kumon Center serves the local communities although we welcome students from anywhere within the state and beyond via our virtual classes.

For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program, click here.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program, click here.

Policies

CENTER CALENDAR

Although Kumon is a year-round program, we do observe most national holidays, spring break, as well as winter break at the end of December. Specific dates of center closings will be posted in the Parent Waiting Area and also on our website. In case of weather related closures, a decision is usually made by noon of class day, and parents are informed via email. In addition, the center voicemail is updated, and so is the homepage of the website.

CLASS ATTENDANCE

If you are not able to keep your scheduled time, please contact the center as soon as possible to reschedule or switch to an online session for that day.

Class attendance is a vital part of the Kumon Program. Observing a student at work in class greatly assists in the planning process for that student. We also prefer to introduce new concepts in class so we may assist your child in reaching his/her Kumon goals. If a student is not able to attend class, please call the center and arrange to pick up the assignments till their next class day

HOME GRADING

We encourage parents to grade their child’s Kumon worksheets completed at home and the students to correct all mistakes before bringing them back to the center. This ensures that the students receive immediate feedback on their work and make corrections early in the process, before mistakes become problematic and hinder progress. To aid the process of home grading, we offer grading training sessions for parents as necessary and provide parents answer booklets. If you encounter any problems while home grading, we encourage you to set up an appointment with the Instructor to discuss the matter.

COMMUNICATION

Parents will receive regular updates about their child’s progress from the Instructor. This could be in the form of phone calls, achievement reports, progress goals and parent conferences. Parents also receive timely newsletters highlighting any relevant information, upcoming events and a list of monthly achievers at the center. If you would like to contact the Instructor, we encourage you to send an email, call or leave a message with the Check-In person. The instruction hours are dedicated entirely to the students and we discourage parents from speaking with the Instructor during class hours.

VACATION

Planning and organizing work for your child takes a great deal of thought and organization. We require at least one week’s notice before any extended absence in order to put your child’s vacation packet together.

ABSENCE POLICY

Please note that students may be absent from Kumon study for no more than one continuous month. After more than one month of absence, when the student resumes, he/she will be considered as "discontinued" and the registration fee applicable at that time will be charged and placement test re-administered. All existing Kumon points will also be lost.

TERMINATION POLICY

If a student is going to drop out of class, either temporarily or indefinitely, a written notice is required at least 30 days before the effective date.
