About the Centre

Introduction

Welcome to our Kumon Math and Reading Centre. For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program.

Policies

CLASS DAYS AND TIMES

We have classes on Mondays & Thursdays or Tuesdays & Fridays from 3:00p.m. – 7:00p.m and Saturdays from 10:00am-2:00pm. Please allow at least 20-30 minutes of class time per subject.

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR CLASS

Students should always come prepared with a sharp pencil and an eraser as well as their completed homework.

INCOMPLETE HOMEWORK

Completing homework daily is necessary to succeed in Kumon. If, for any reason, homework is not completed, please bring any unfinished assignments to class, so that homework can be reassigned.

WHEN A STUDENT IS UNABLE TO ATTEND CLASS

If you let us know a class in advance, we will provide work for the absent period. Please call us at the phone number listed above or email us at the email address above to make the arrangements. Absent student’s work will be placed in our pick up boxes located just outside the front door and will remain there until the morning of their next class day. You will receive a phone call notifying you that the work is there to be picked up.

PARENT’S ROLE IN KUMON

Please check that your child has completed their work daily. Home marking is encouraged so that corrections can be made immediately and so that students stay on track. We will be happy to show you how to mark and you will be provided with an answer book.

COMMUNICATION BETWEEN INSTRUCTORS AND PARENTS

We will send home student progress information after every achievement test, along with the achievement test results. Information of this type is sent to you through your child, so please check their blue Kumon case for communications to you. If you ever have any questions at all, please call us at any time or let our receptionist know during class that you need to talk to me and we will set up a mutually convenient time.

THE CLASSROOM IS A PLACE FOR LEARNING

Some children may have food allergies, so please do not bring food or drink into the classroom area. Students are asked to be considerate of their fellow classmates by talking quietly and minimally. Parents and siblings are asked to please wait in the Parent Waiting Area and to keep noise to a minimum.

CLASSROOM ROUTINE

Students should go to the check in area and pick up their file. New homework will be exchanged with completed assignments. Students should then find a seat and begin the day’s class work. When corrections and class work are completed, marked by an assistant and corrected, students should check out with the Instructor before they leave. Parents are responsible for their child while at the Kumon Centre, therefore we cannot monitor a child’s whereabouts once they have left the classroom, if the parents have dropped them off.
