About the Centre

Introduction

Welcome to the Kumon Math and Reading Centre of Calgary - Royal Oak. For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program.

  • To foster independence in our students and to provide a quiet study environment, we ask that parents wait outside the classroom during class hours.

Home Marking

Home marking takes approximately five (5) minutes each day, yet the benefits are long-term. It provides students with immediate feedback. Students can learn from their errors right away and not repeat them on future assignments. Home marking also helps parents become aware of their child’s strengths and weaknesses. Answer books and marking guidelines are provided.

Worksheets

  • We understand from time to time students will require additional worksheets due to appointments and extracurricular activities.  Please allow one week to prepare for additional worksheets.  Same day requests will not be accommodated.
  • Although we make every effort to ensure that the worksheets given to the students are correct, from time to time we make errors.  Parents and students, please check the worksheets for correct level and number of packets received prior to leaving the Centre.
  • Student will receive worksheets at each centre visit.   There are no “catch up” worksheets.

Parental Communication

  • Parent-Instructor-Student communication is critical to the success of the student’s learning. Some of the channels are: periodic progress reports; parent communication notes; phone, email or pre-arranged consultations outside of class hours.
  • Student progress updates are not available during class hours.

Centre Closure

Notice will be posted on the door two (2) weeks prior to the closure date.

  • All Saturdays preceding/proceeding statutory holidays.
  • One (1) week in the summer.  Dates TBD.

  • All students are scheduled for their studies.  Schedules can be changed at any time if there is an available time slot.  Advance notice is required for students who require an alternate time due to appointments and such.  Same day requests may not be accommodated.
  • If a student is more than 15 minutes late for their scheduled class, there is a chance that they may have to pick up their work and complete it at home if the Centre is at capacity or if the Centre is closing in 15 minutes.
  • We encourage students to take assigned homework with them during holidays and seasonal breaks. Please complete a vacation request form.  Vacation packages require a minimum of two (2) week notice.  Same day requests will not be accommodated.
  • Parents who are picking up worksheet, must drop off completed worksheets.
