About the Centre

Introduction

Welcome to our Kumon Math and Reading Centre. For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program.

COMMUNICATION:

  • Your child’s progress is always our highest priority. If you would like a progress report or meeting to discuss how your child is progressing, please let Ms. Carol know. Parent meetings are usually done by appointment outside of regular class hours.
  • Planned centre closures are posted on our web page in “Centre Updates." A notice will also be posted in the Parent Waiting Area. Generally, the centre is closed on statutory holiday long weekends as well as a winter break in December/January/March (to coincide with school closure).

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES:

Please notify Carol if you need a change to your child’s regular workload or routine.
  • Vacation Time - If you will be going on vacation - Kumon is very portable. Let us know your last class day, the day you will return to class, how much work you want to do each day, and we will prepare it for you. A minimum of 48 hours' notice is required for a short vacation (1 week). However, longer vacations will require additional notice to ensure that materials are available.
  • Illness - If your child is not able to attend a class (not feeling well, etc.) you can stop in and pick up their work. If their work is not picked up, it will be deferred until the next scheduled class day. If you are picking up, please call and let us know.
  • Makeup classes are not available.

CLASS RULES:
  • Please ensure that your child’s Kumon pouch is looked after with care. Please remember to come to each class with a pencil, eraser and all the work they were assigned in the pouch. If, for any reason, homework has not been completed, please return it anyway.
  • Students are required to behave in a respectful manner at the Kumon Centre – in class and in the waiting area. This includes using good manners, a quiet voice, and not being unruly.
  • If you would like your child’s completed worksheets returned, please let us know. Once the worksheets are returned, please remove them from your child’s pouch.
  • Parents of Early Learner students (pre-Gr1) are required to wait in the centre for the entire time that their child is attending class.
  • If you leave the centre, ensure that you return before your child’s classwork is completed – you remain in full guardianship of your child. We cannot account for your child’s whereabouts once he/she has left the classroom/student area.
  • If you wish for your child to call you when they have completed their work, please provide them with a cell phone to use. The phone must be set on SILENT during class times.
  • Please note that personal electronic devices (iPods, Cell phones, etc.) must be turned off in the classroom.
  • Due to allergies and sensitivities, no food or drinks are allowed in the centre (Classroom or waiting area), water is fine. Parents who love their coffee, as I do, are welcome to enjoy that as well.
  • Kumon worksheets are proprietary material to which copyright applies. Duplication in whole or in part is illegal.
  • *** Class is scheduled for each student. Please arrive on time like you would for a swimming lesson. If the student is late their work will be adjusted and homework provided.
