Centre Updates

March 17, 2020

Dear Kumon Families,

Kumon North Bay will now be taking additional measures to help stop the spreading of COVID-19. All classes are now cancelled. We will however remain dedicated to ensuring all our students receive proper support during these difficult times. Below you will find some changes to our usual practices effective immediately.

1. We are offering extended hours for homework exchange
We will be open for homework exchange Tuesday, March 17th (today) from 11am – 6pm; and Friday, March 20th from 11am – 6pm. Starting Monday, March 23rd and continuing until further notice our office will be open for homework exchange during the following hours:
?    Mon:     1:00pm – 6:00pm
?    Tue:     1:00pm – 6:00pm
?    Wed:     1:00pm – 6:00pm
?    Thu:     1:00pm – 6:00pm
?    Fri:     1:00pm – 6:00pm
We are limiting the amount of people—including staff—at the Kumon Centre at one time to ten people. These extra hours should help to spread out families and prevent large groups from coming to Kumon.

2. You can schedule private conferences
You can use this link (https://www.kumon.com/north-bay/scheduler) to schedule private conferences including Placement Testing. If you have been informed of an upcoming Achievement Test (to complete a Kumon level), you can also use the link above to schedule a time to complete this test at Kumon. If you are self-quarantining or do not feel comfortable attending the Kumon Centre please let us know so that we can make alternate arrangements for you.

3. Send us oral reading audio files
To better gauge students in our Reading Program, all families enrolled in Kumon Reading should send us audio (or video) files of the student reading two sentences from the worksheets twice per week. For these readings:
?    Let us know what page the student is reading from (page numbers are located at the top-left corner of the page)
?    Do not assist your child for these readings and allow them to misread words
?    Don’t allow your child to practice before the reading
?    Email oral reading audio (or video) to [email protected]

4. We are still available via phone and email
Parents with questions, comments, or concerns about your child’s Kumon studies are (as always) encourages to get in touch with us via email, phone, or text.
[email protected]
?    Centre phone: 705-474-5132 option 2
?    Geoff’s cellphone: 705-498-5043

Students stuck on homework can email pictures of their work to ask for help. Students must have something written on the page attempting the question, and we will call you when we receive this email to discuss the question with the student.

5. Skype
We are currently looking into using Skype to work with some students, especially Early Learners. We will update you on if or how that might work.

6. Home-marking
If you will not be exchanging work regularly, we highly recommend that you mark your child’s work and have them fix their mistakes at home. Answer books are available if you would like to start home-marking so please let us know and we can provide one to you. It is important that you mark any answer that was originally wrong with an ‘x’ so that when we receive the work back we know the original score that the student achieved before corrections. A home-marking brochure is available as a PDF or paper copy.

With school suspended, and your children’s routines disrupted, we anticipate the value of Kumon will be even greater for many families in order to continue with learning activities for your children. One of the great advantages of Kumon is the ability to study Kumon at home through our worksheets, which are designed to be completed independently.  Of course, your support with this process, and the routine of daily study, is crucial.

Larger daily workloads, and homework for extended periods of time can also be prepared. However, if you would like changes to your child’s regular study plan, we ask that you provide us some notice so that we have adequate time to plan appropriate work at your child’s individual level and pace.

Staff at our Centre are following the recommended guidelines from Public Health Agency of Canada in our Kumon Centre, and ask that you do the same:
?    Frequently and thoroughly wash your hands with water and soap and keep your hands away from your face to prevent infection. Washing should take a minimum of 30 seconds. If your child cannot count to 30, teach your child to sing either “Happy Birthday” or “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” twice while washing.
?    Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze or cough into your sleeve or arm.
?    Get an annual flu vaccination, which is available from clinics and pharmacies.
?    Do not come to Kumon if you or your child is ill.
?    If you or your family have returned from another country, please respect the Government of Canada guidelines and self-quarantine for a period of no less than 14 days. In this case please notify us of your situation.

If you have concerns about your child’s health or questions about symptoms associated with the coronavirus, please contact your family’s physician or visit the Government of Canada English website or French website.

Thank you for your understanding and patience during this situation.
