Commitment
We strongly encourage a minimum of 12 months of uninterrupted studies; the ideal will be for your child to aim for program completion! Kumon is a long-term program and not a“quick-fix” solution. Students will get the maximum benefit from the program by building a strong foundation and working off that foundation into levels above their current grade level. By studying year-round, we can ensure that study routines are not broken and can be reinforced during school breaks.
Holiday Work
We require a minimum of one week’s notice for any holiday work two weeks or less. For holiday work two weeks or more, we require a minimum of two weeks’ notice. Class time is reserved for student instruction and classroom operations, therefore we are unable to prepare holiday work during class hours. We thank you in advance for your understanding. Please ask our front desk staff for a holiday work request form for holiday work.
Breaks, Transfer or Withdrawal
We require a minimum of one calendar month’s written notice for any breaks, transfer or withdrawal requests.
A maximum of one calendar month break is allowed per child per calendar year as per Kumon North America’s policy. Any breaks longer than a month will result in the student being discontinued from the program and the student will need to pay the enrollment fee upon their return. Kumon Plus points accumulated will be lost. Therefore we strongly encourage students to take holiday work with them when they are on vacation to ensure smooth and uninterrupted progress in their Kumon studies. Virtual support is available for students who are on vacation; please talk to our front desk staff or email me at [email protected] for more details.
For transfers, please let us know which Kumon centre you wish to transfer to, and we will send your child’s progress report and last achievement test results over to the new centre to ensure no study interruption and a smooth transfer process.
Drop-off / Pickup
Parents are responsible for the safe arrival and pick up of their child. We require all students 10 and under to be dropped off and picked up from our parent waiting area. We cannot be responsible for the student's safety and well-being outside of our classroom. We will have a phone available for students to call their parents if they do not see their parents in the waiting area.
Classroom Etiquette
No eating or drinking inside the classroom. Water bottles are acceptable.
All cell phones must be switched off or in silent mode. Cell phone use is not permitted inside the classroom.
The classroom is for self-study. Please be respectful of others and remain quiet during class.
The washroom is available for student use upon request. Please ask our check-in staff for the washroom key and keep our washroom clean and sanitary at all times. Students who violate this policy may not be permitted use of the washroom if found to be repeat offenders.
Attendance and Homework Expectation
Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes. In case of emergency or illness, please call our centre staff to notify us of their absence. Kumon work can either be picked up by a family member or we can adjust the work upon request. Please do not attend class in person if the student is not feeling well. Student needs to have time to rest and recover.
We expect all homework to be completed before students attend class. Please let us know if your child is having difficulty completing their homework. Kumon is designed as a worksheet-based program that incorporates both homework and classwork, therefore it is essential for students to complete their homework to progress smoothly in the program. Please make sure to set aside time with your child every day that is designated for Kumon work; try to pick a time when the child is awake and alert. Our check-in staff will check to ensure that all homework is completed. From time to time we will randomly be holding “treat days” and all students who turned in completed homework that day will receive a treat. Please let your child know to encourage them to complete their work.
It is strongly encouraged that parents grade their child's work daily and have them do corrections daily. Timely corrections can help a child understand where they err and avoid similar mistakes in the future. We will provide grading instructions as well as answer keys to parents for home grading purposes.
Parent Communication
As Kumon is a worksheet-based program that incorporates both homework and classwork, it is essential that parents reach out to us if their children run into any issues with their homework. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] or call me at (778)730-1001 during office hours to discuss your child’s progress.
If you would like a more in-depth discussion regarding your child's progress, I strongly encourage you to book a meeting with me to discuss your child’s Kumon studies. Meetings are scheduled during office hours. Please contact me or my staff to schedule a meeting.
Class times are reserved for instructional purposes, therefore I am unable to speak with parents during class hours. Please let my front desk staff know if you have any pressing issues, and I will call you after class hours. It is essential for students to have a quiet study environment, so parents are not allowed to enter the main classroom during class hours. We thank you in advance for your understanding.
Recommended Reading List and Library Materials
We strongly encourage all students who are enrolled in our reading program to check out books on our recommended reading list prior to studying that level (ex. Students in Reading Level C should read books on the level D list). Having good reading skills is advantageous to doing well in school, and we encourage students to read books from different genres to broaden their knowledge and enhance their comprehension skills. We hold reading clubs every summer to encourage students to take advantage of their summer break to read more. Students will be given an award at the end of summer if they reach their reading goal (goal to be determined jointly by the instructor and student).
Students are allowed to check out one book at a time. They may keep the book for up to two weeks.
We encourage our early learners to check out books that they can read along with their parents at home. Reading together at home from a young age can help foster a love of reading! Early learners may keep their books for one week.
Student Awards Ceremony
We will hold a student awards ceremony annually towards the end of the year (October or November). Kumon North America’s Student Award Program recognizes all advanced students who are studying above grade level as a result of their hard work and dedication.
Student Award Categories include:
* KIS Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum (KIS is Kumon International Standards)
* Level G by Grade 4, Level J by Grade 6 (starting the level by the end of the grade)
* Kumon Program Completion Award (Level “O” for Math and “L” for Reading)
* Dedication and Commitment Awards for 5 to 12 years of continuous study
