“Are We There Yet?”: Embracing the Long-Term Journey with Kumon

Girl Studying

No matter where your family is in their Kumon journey, it’s natural to wonder, “Are we there yet?” At Kumon, we believe in the power of long-term study to help unlock a child’s full potential—not just academically, but in how they approach learning.

Our goal is to nurture confident, independent learners. Imagine your child coming home, sitting down, and starting homework with focus and joy—no reminders needed. That level of independence isn’t instantaneous; it’s developed gradually through consistent, long-term practice.

A successful Kumon journey is built on small, powerful actions: establishing a consistent routine, staying patient through the ups and downs, supporting your child to push past frustration, encouraging daily study, attending Center sessions, and celebrating achievement along the way. Together, these habits pave the way for lasting growth and confidence. Each of these actions contributes to something greater— real, lasting growth and the quiet confidence that comes from learning how to learn.

When your child joined Kumon, the Instructor carefully assessed their abilities and placed them at a comfortable starting point. This helps build a foundation without tears or frustration, easing them into the daily habit of practicing math and reading. Over time, students grow into more independent learners, building curiosity, stamina, and resilience when tackling new or difficult material.

Certain characteristics- tenacity, focus, motivation, confidence, determination, and curiosity are lifelong traits worth cultivating. They take time, consistency, and support to develop—but once they do, students carry them into every aspect of life.

We also understand that the path isn’t always smooth. Vacations, challenging concepts, shifting schedules, and changing interests can all impact a child’s motivation. To support continued engagement in Kumon, here are a few tips:

Kumon Connect

Our digital platform (which utilizes the same worksheets as our paper program) offers flexibility and real-time insights into your child’s learning. With daily grading, automatically timed assignments, and on-the-go accessibility, Kumon Connect helps your Instructor better tailor lesson plans and helps you maintain momentum—whether during vacations or busy activity weeks. Ask your Instructor for more information about Kumon Connect.

Goal Setting

Clear progress goals and roadmaps can increase motivation. Knowing what’s ahead and how long it will take provides structure and purpose. Just remember—patience remains essential, especially when encountering the repetition needed to build mastery with each concept. Reach out to your child’s Instructor to discuss current and future goals: getting on the same page will help everyone progress smoothly and consistently.

The Power of Praise

Specific, timely praise can be a game-changer. It boosts motivation, confidence, and resilience. A simple, genuine comment like, “Great job completing your Kumon today—I know it’s been a busy week and I’m proud you made the time,” can make a significant difference. Ask your Instructor how to offer meaningful encouragement at home that supports progress and motivation; they praise students, including your own, daily and can share effective strategies.

Open Communication

Keep an open dialogue with your Instructor; they can offer guidance on switching to Kumon Connect, setting new goals, suggesting motivational strategies, or adjusting the daily workload if things are becoming too challenging for your child. Instructors understand each student’s learning style and can work with your family to find the best path forward.

At Kumon, students are not just building academic skills— our Instructors help children grow into capable, independent learners ready to take on the world. Achieving KIS, ASHR levels, and program completion are among the goals for Kumon students, but it takes time and patience to build the grit that will help them achieve those milestones. Connect with your Kumon Instructor to learn more about what you can achieve when working as a team.
