From Early Learner to Advanced Honor Roll: A Kumon Success Story

Chiffalyn

When Chiffalyn first stepped into the Kumon Center of San Jose East in the summer of 2019, she was just five years old—a curious early learner beginning her academic adventure. Under the guidance of Instructor Kai Sun, Chiffalyn began her Kumon journey in Math Level 5A, mastering number tracing, recognition and counting, and in Reading Level 7A, where she built vocabulary and learned to connect spoken words to images.

Even at that young age, Chiffalyn showed strong commitment and focus—traits that would carry her far beyond the basics.

Overcoming Challenges with Determination

Like many students, Chiffalyn’s learning journey was tested during the pandemic. Remote learning and disrupted routines could have slowed her progress, but instead, she pressed forward with resilience. With encouragement from her older sister and her Instructor, she stayed consistent with her homework, asked for help when she needed it, and kept her eye on her goals.

Her determination didn’t just keep her on track, it also inspired Kumon Instructors across the country to persevere in helping their students navigate challenges of their own.

Remarkable Achievements

Fast-forward to today, and Chiffalyn is a proud member of Kumon’s Advanced Student Honor Roll, studying three years ahead of her school grade. Her recent achievements include:

  • Math: She has completed Level H—covering linear equations, systems of equations, functions and graphs—and is preparing for Level I, which introduces factoring and quadratic functions.
  • Reading: She is working at Level G, developing advanced reading comprehension and literary analysis skills, including interpreting complex paragraphs and passages.

These advanced skills have strengthened her school performance, especially in areas like long division, fractions and decimals. More importantly, Kumon has built her confidence in tackling challenging material—a skill that will serve her well throughout her academic career and life.

Balance, Motivation and Advice for Others

Outside the classroom, Chiffalyn enjoys basketball and spending time with friends. She encourages other students to stay positive, persevere through challenges and never hesitate to ask for help.

Her story is proof that with the right combination of dedication, family support and Kumon’s individualized learning method, early learners can not only keep pace – they can thrive far beyond their grade level.
